Difference between br30 and br40

Can I use BR30 instead of BR40?

The 30 and 40 refer to the size of the bulb in 1/8 inches — 30/8 and 40/8 inches respectively. For 4″ cans, you cannot choose BR40 bulbs — they’re too big. For 5″ cans, a BR30 will fit with a little space to all sides while a BR40 will fit with little to no space on the sides.

What’s the difference between a BR30 and BR40 light bulb?

Within the floodlight category, the main difference between the BR30 LED and the BR40 LEDs that I tested is the amount of light produced. With 1100 lumens, the BR40 LEDs are about 40 to 70 percent brighter than the BR30 LEDs. In a two-story space they’ll “wash” the walls and ceiling as well as the floor.

What is BR30 BR40?

The difference between a BR20, BR30, and BR40 is actually the size or diameter of the light bulb. The number represents increments of an 8th of an inch. For example, a BR30 is 30/8ths of an inch or 30 divided by 8 which equals 3.75″ in diameter. The same example applies to a PAR38.

What does BR mean in light bulbs?

BR stands for “bulged reflector.” These bulbs traditionally had a bulged reflector inside the housing to increase the amount of light they put out, giving them a slightly bulging shape.

What is the difference between R and BR bulbs?

A standalone “R” stands for reflector, which is a mirror-like coating located on the inside of the bulb’s glass housing, boosting the light output. BR bulbs are used for everything from floodlights like the BR40 or IR heat lamps like the BR38.

Where are BR30 bulbs used?

BR30 light bulbs deliver soft-edged, directional light and can typically be found in general household light fixtures, recessed can lighting, and/or track lighting. Their lighting is less precise and produces less shadow than PAR bulbs, but they are great for fixtures that use dimmer switches.

Are PAR30 and BR30 interchangeable?

The number following the letters in a recessed light bulb indicates size: it’s the diameter of the light bulb in eighths of an inch. So, a BR30 is 30/8 inches, or three and 3/4 inches. So, you can swap out a PAR30 for an R30 or a BR30 – they are all the same size.

What size can for BR30 bulb?

When choosing a bulb, you must find out the sizing of your recessed fixture can. For general household lighting, most recessed lighting cans are 4″, 5″, or 6″. If your household has 4” cans, only BR30 bulbs will fit. For 5″ cans, BR30 bulbs will fit with a little space, while a BR40 will fit with no space on the sides.

What is the difference between par 30 and 38?

PAR = Parabolic Aluminized Reflector, 38 = thirty-eight eighths of an inch, or 38*1/8″=4.75″. 30 = thirty eighths of an inch, or 30*1/8″=3.75″. As you can see, PAR38 has a larger diameter than a PAR30 bulb or can.

What does BR40 mean?

What does BR40 mean? BR40 is a large reflector flood lamp. It is the largest of the R-style flood lights. We like to call them “flood lights” because the BR40, like its smaller siblings R20 and BR30, has a frosted diffuser to produce wider less focused light.

Is BR40 same as PAR38?

PAR38 will fit – the number denotes eighths of inches wide, so PAR38= 38/8″ width, or 4 3/4″w. A BR40 is 40/8″ inch wide, or 5″ wide. About the same size and will fit in the same fixtures.

What does BR20 mean?

BR20 | BR30 | BR40. PAR (short for Parabolic Aluminized Reflector) bulbs are lamps with “spot light” features, meaning that they provide a beam spread that is typically lower than 45°. Use PAR bulbs when attempting to put a focused beam of light on an object such as in track lighting or illuminating artwork.

What is difference between R30 and BR30?

So this long answer is to say that a BR30 bulb is a replacement for the older R30 bulb. It stands for the diameter of the bulb in 1/8 inches. So the 30 means the diameter is 30/8 inch or 3 3/4 inches. The R is an older designation for “reflector” meaning the type of recessed light bulb.

What is the difference between par 20 and par 30?

We mentioned that LED PAR20 Bulbs are similar in diameter to the PAR16 bulbs. While a PAR30, PAR20, and a PAR16 bulb can have very similar color temperature options, lumen outputs, and wattages, the main difference with a PAR 30 bulb is the beam spread and the bulb dimension.

What are Type R light bulbs?

Nowadays, R type bulbs have an evenly frosted coating that works to diffuse light and prevents glare. Unlike the PAR bulb, the entire bulb envelope of R type excluding the base is constructed using blown glass. Also, the exterior part of the bulb is very smooth.

What’s the difference between r40 and BR40 bulbs?

BR40 is a large reflector flood lamp. It is the largest of the R-style flood lights. The “B” stands for “bulged”, the “R” stands for “reflector”, while the “40” represents the diameter of the face of the bulb, in this case 40 (1/8) inches, or 5 inches.

Can R20 replace PAR20?

Light bulbs are measured in eighths of an inch, so a bulb designated as a size 20 measures 20 eighths of an inch, or 2 1/2 inches, across at the largest point. This means that R20 and PAR20 bulbs are the same size.

What is the difference between R20 and R30 bulbs?

All light bulb diameters are referred to in eighths on an inch, so if the diameter of your bulb is 20 eighths of an inch (2-1/2 inches), you’ll need an R20 CFL. If your bulb is 30 eighths of an inch in diameter (3-3/4 inches), you’ll need an R30 CFL, and so on.

What type of bulb is best for recessed lighting?

For recessed spotlights, we recommend using MR16 or PAR bulbs. They both provide several color temperature options and beam angle options.

Can I use regular bulbs in recessed lighting?

A recessed fixture with a medium screw base lamp holder can take an incandescent, fluorescent, halogen, or LED light bulb. If you want to be able to dim your recessed lights, or control them with a remote or automated system, choose fixtures you can use incandescent, halogen, or LED light bulbs in.

What is a BR30 flood light?

BR30 lamps are a type of lamp approximately 5 inches long and slightly less than 4 inches in diameter. They belong to category of directional lighting types, with typically a “wide flood” beam angle. So, the “30” indicates a lamp diameter of 30/8 inches, or 3.75 inches.

What is the brightest BR30 LED bulb?

Cree Lighting 100 Watt replacement BR30 LED bulb are among the brightest BR30 LED bulbs available, ideal for 5 inch and 6 in recessed cans in high ceilings or anywhere you just want the most light.

What type of bulb is a flood light?

Traditionally, most outdoor floodlights have used halogen light bulbs, which use 20-30% less energy than older incandescent light bulbs, but which come nowhere near LED light bulbs for their energy-saving potential.

What does PAR38 flood light mean?

PAR 38 is a type of halogen or LED light bulb. There are two definitions for the acronym PAR, but both describe the same thing. One is parabolic aluminized reflector. The gas within PAR 38 bulbs rebuilds the filament and creates a bulb that is longer-lasting than many other types of halogen lighting.
