Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, a prominent progressive, has been the target of a barrage of fiery insults from former President Donald Trump and other Republicans for years, including persistent but unfounded rumours that she married her brother.
Ilhan Omar is a Democratic Party politician in the United States. Since 2019, she has served as the United States Representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district.
Omar is the first Somali American, the first African-born naturalized citizen, and the first woman of colour to serve in the US Congress. The politician is also one of the first two Muslim women elected to the House of Representatives.
Did Ilhan Omar Married Her Brother To Escape Immigration Fraud? Truth Revealed
In a statement released during her congressional campaign, Ilhan Omar categorically rejected claims propagated by conservative media that her second spouse was her brother. She married him to commit immigration fraud.
She called the charge “absurd and disrespectful.” She has stated that she is the youngest of seven children. However, she refused to name her siblings in a 2018 Associated Press piece.

There is no indication that she married her brother or immigrated to the United States illegally. However, Trump has previously supported the theory, saying in July 2019 to reporters, “I’m sure somebody would be looking into that.”
In the wake of recent Islamophobic attacks and insults directed at Omar, Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado is the latest high-profile conservative to resurrect the unproven claim.
In a speech on November 17, Boebert alluded to Omar’s “brother-husband” and named her a member of the “Jihad Squad.”
In a statement, Trump accused Omar, who immigrated to the United States as a young girl, of “abandoning her nation” and said she “should apologize for marrying her brother.”
Of course the irony is this vile man is literally making the case in favor of the Islamophobia bill on the House floor. These republicans are irredeemable. https://t.co/ceyHQQn201

Who Is Ilhan Omar Husband? Her Family Details
Omar was engaged to Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi (né Aden) in 2002. They had an unofficial faith-based Islamic marriage, she claimed. Together, the couple has two children. In 2008, they divorced within their faith tradition, according to Omar.
Omar married British Somali Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009. According to Omar, she and Elmi divorced on religious grounds in 2011, and she later reconnected with Hirsi, with whom she shared a third child in 2012.
Elmi and Omar divorced lawfully in 2017, and Omar and Hirsi married legally in 2018. However, on October 7, 2019, Omar filed for divorce from Hirsi, citing the marriage’s “irreversible disintegration.”
There are cynics who would rather see us divided on racial, ethnic, gender and religious lines.
But as Americans we should stand united against all forms of bigotry.

Omar was born in Somalia in 1982, arrived in America as a refugee with her father and siblings in 1995, passing through a Kenyan refugee camp on their route to Minneapolis, where she eventually became a US citizen.
