Dick Gregory Children, Wiki, Wife, Family, Is He Dead? Facts

Dick Gregory is said to have been Barack Obama’s man – the first African American President of the United States of America. History showed that he ran for President of the United States in 1968 after running for mayor of Chicago the previous year, but was defeated by Richard Daley. Just as Daley prevented Gregory from becoming mayor of Chicago, his participation in the 1968 presidential election is believed to have prevented Hubert Humphrey, the Democratic Party candidate, from defeating his Republican counterpart, Richard Nixon.

Running under the Freedom and Peace Party as a registered candidate, Dick’s campaign prioritized issues that dominated public discourse. These include the Vietnam War, unemployment/economic reforms, and of course African American rights. At one point during the election campaign, the federal government took over from Gregory due to dollar bills printed with his likeness circulating. The bills didn’t cause him big problems, but it got him the huge attention and exposure he needed for his campaign.

In the end, Gregory was not close to becoming President; However, he mustered enough voices that inspired many to suggest he had shattered Hubert Humphrey’s presidential ambition. Also, his run for the presidency is widely believed to have put him on the list of enemies of Richard Nixon.

Despite the above, Dick Gregory is best known for integrating comedy with civil rights activism. The African-American comedian pioneered stand-up comedy, using it as a way to spark civil rights movements and tackle societal ills such as racism. You will easily see that Dick is described as a social critic and a political activist. But beyond that, the man has written quite a few books and portrayed different characters in a handful of movies.

Most recently, he played Dan Coleman in The Recreation Seeker (2017). You’ll also find him as a restroom attendant in the 2002 comedy film – The Hot Chick and as the ABC Stage 67 civil law-walker

Dick Gregory Wiki, is he dead?

Often described as a stand-up comedy legend who grounded civil law humor and social activism, Dick Gregory is no more. He died on August 19, 2017 at the age of 84. His son, Christian Gregory, announced his death on Facebook the following day. Although it is known that Gregory had previously been diagnosed with lymphoma, he died of congestive heart failure. According to the information he has, his cancer went into remission after he rejected chemotherapy and decided to stick to a strict diet to manage this disease. The congestive heart failure that caused his death is said to have been triggered by a serious bacterial infection.

Born as Richard Claxton Gregory on October 12, 1932, in St. Louis, Missouri, Gregory grew up wondering why his father, Presley Gregory, had to abandon him and his siblings and why his mother, Lucille, could only work as a maid to take care of the family. Poverty gave him a curious mind. It was easy for Gregory to see that so much was wrong with society. This led him to dedicate his life to tackling the ills of society and fighting for civil rights.

In high school, Dick ran well. So, he secured a track scholarship that allowed him to go to Southern Illinois University. He continued to excel in running, but left school later (in 1956) as he studied less and ran more. This was after returning to college when he was discharged by the United States Army; earlier in 1954. It was with the army that Gregory began doing comedy.

Leaving Southern Illinois University, Dick decided to pursue a career in comedy. With that, he moved to Chicago where he struggled until he was hired by Playboy founder Hugh Hefner to replace another comedian at the Chicago Playboy Club. Eventually it became one of the best of its kind.

The rise of fame and the grand prize he had won for eradicating poverty allowed Dick the Audacity to lead a more meaningful campaign against racism and all the things he felt were wrong with society. His political activism got him into a lot of trouble but he never backed down.
