The athletics high jump was revolutionized by Dick Fosbury, who passed away at age 76.
The American performed a maneuver known as the “Fosbury Flip,” still employed by high jumpers today, to leap back over the bar to win gold at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.
With his technique, Fosbury established a record at the Games of 2.24 meters.
Fosbury’s agent Ray Schulte announced his client’s passing on Instagram on Sunday.
“With sadness, I must share the news that Dick Fosbury, a longtime friend, and client, passed away quietly in his sleep early on Sunday morning, according to Schulte”.
“The friends and admirers of Dick who came from all over the world will miss him dearly. A real legend who was everyone’s friend.”
Fosbury started experimenting with the “flip” in school, and with the help of his coaches, by the time he was in college, he had almost perfected it.
