“13 Reasons Why” Actor Devin Druid Defends Graphic Rape Scene in Season 2
Source: teenvogue.com
After season 1 of 13 Reasons Why premiered in 2017, the show received intense backlash around the way it portrayed suicide and sexual assault. Since season 2 of the Netflix original dropped on May 18, 13 Reasons Why has been experiencing a new wave of criticism regarding its depiction of sexual assault.
In season 2, a graphic scene in the last episode depicts Monty raping Tyler while two other members of the baseball team hold him down. On Reddit, viewers of the series called out the scene for “shock value,” and added they were “unsettled” and “bothered” by the graphic way the show portrayed sexual assault.
Now, Devin Druid, who plays Tyler on the show, is speaking out about the scene and addressing concerns. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Devin defended the show’s decision to take Tyler’s character through this arc and depict those scenes the way that they did.
“You know, I think people are always gonna have opinions on the show and what we do,” Devin told ET. “We can’t sugarcoat it or censor it at all because that’s not how these events happen. And I think it is this trying to portray and make people understand what happens in these unfortunate and tragic circumstances.”
He also talked about how he prepared for those scenes, and how, “as an actor I felt a lot of responsibility to accurately portray the pain and humiliation that one can go through when they’re assaulted in this way, especially with the stigma around sexual assault with men.”
“Especially this age of kind of toxic and fragile masculinity, I think that plays a big part in this idea of men being raped, it’s not something that people think about a lot,” he added. “And then as a male character, what does that feel like for you in a society where you’re told this shouldn’t happen to you, and not that it should happen to anybody, but that this can’t happen to you, but it does, what does that do to you on a mental level as well as physically obviously an enormous amount of pain.”
The episode in question begins with a trigger warning alerting viewers that the 70-minute installment will feature a graphic rape scene. Even so, viewers have taken it upon themselves to chronicle potentially triggering scenes with time stamps, and alerting each other. The second season also begins with a PSA from actors appearing out of character; in it, they suggest that if a viewer is struggling with some of the issues discussed in the show, it may not be the best time for them to watch, or that they should watch with a trusted adult.
13 Reasons Why was officially renewed for season 3 earlier this week. Season 3 is reported to return in 2019.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings also addressed the show’s controversy when he commented on the renewal for season 3. “13 Reasons Why has been enormously popular and successful,” he said. “It’s engaging content. It is controversial. But nobody has to watch it.”
