Desmin Borges My worst moment

My worst moment: ‘You’re the Worst’ co-star Desmin Borges on almost getting fired.

On the ensemble comedy “You’re the Worst” (currently in its fourth season on FXX), sweet puppy-eyed Edgar might be the most well-adjusted person of the group, bouts of PTSD from his military service notwithstanding. Played by Desmin Borges, he is the show’s emotional ballast amid the comedic wreckage of damaged personalities that make up this circle of friends.

It premiered at Victory Gardens in 2009 and eventually transferred to New York. And that’s when things got hairy.

“It was a big break on some fronts,” Borges said, talking by phone from New York, “but it was also probably the most tumultuous experience that I have ever gone through with material that I loved so much.”

My worst moment

“The play is a hip-hop satire about an underdog Puerto Rican wrestler from the Bronx dealing with issues of racism, capitalism and stereotyping through the world of WWE-style wrestling.

“In Chicago, we got amazing reviews across the board and that quickly got us moved to New York and we thought, ‘Oh man, this is it!’ It was my first play in New York off-Broadway and we really wanted it to be seen by a wide range of audiences, specifically young brown kids who don’t normally get to see versions of themselves on stage all the time. It meant a lot to me.

“So we get to the second night of previews and a little hiccup happens with the tempo. And I’m the one that sets the tempo for the show. I think we counted and my character says 3,000 more words than Hamlet.

“I come into rehearsal the next day, it was a Wednesday, and Eddie Torres, the director, says, ‘Hey, I need to take you to lunch.’ And we sit down and he says, ‘Look, I’m not going to (expletive) with you, the producers told me that if you don’t make the changes they want tonight, they’re firing you.’

“It hit me like a ton of bricks. I had no idea there had been all this talk about changes the producers wanted.

“So we sent everyone home from rehearsal and Eddie, Kris and I went over the lines and they just kept yelling, ‘Faster! Faster!’ (Chokes up) That night the performance felt really disconnected but apparently my job was safe until Friday because they wanted to see other improvements by Friday. They wanted it faster, stronger, edgier.

“Long story short, the improvements happened. I didn’t lose my job. The play was a success like it was in Chicago.

“But it was the first time that I realized that no matter how great the art is, there’s this really vicious side to the theater world that I didn’t understand existed. Because in Chicago it was never really like that.”

The aftermath

“It was rough times! I was angry for the whole rest of the run, which was really good because it gave me something to push against. Every night, by the time I got to the end and beat the (crap) out of everyone, I really wanted to beat the ‘crap’ out of everyone! Every single night!

“To this day, I don’t know if it was just their poor planning and poor communication, or if Carole Roth (who runs Second Stage, where it was produced) is just an undercover mad genius and it worked out for the best.

“But I do know that the ultimate feeling and taste that it put in my mouth for the New York theater scene and Second Stage, in particular, has made me really leery about projects in that arena. It would be hard to go through that again.”

The takeaway

“If I was in a similar situation again, I think I could be a little more vocal now because I have a little more confidence in myself and my ability. Although I don’t know that I’d be comfortable enough to call someone’s bluff and say, ‘(Expletive) you, fire me!’ and see what happens. That’s not how I like to do business anyway. It takes too much energy for me to be a jerk about something. I’m all about spreading the love.”
