The violence and assault of a 70-year-old former city commissioner was the subject of a Sunday arrest of Derrick Yearby by San Francisco police. They also said they investigated whether the victim got targeted because he is Asian.
When asked about the event, Chew recalled that he did not have enough time to use the pepper spray he had in his pocket to defend himself and that nothing was taken from him after he was beaten unconscious.
Chew said in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle on Saturday that he is unsure of what happened during the encounter.
All he can recall is passing out on the sidewalk, getting assistance from eyewitnesses, and then, once the police showed up, being brought to California Pacific Medical Center on Van Ness Avenue.

Derrick Yearby Asian Hate Crime
The reports from CBS claim this unethical act was an Asain hate crime.
“Protesters disrupted traffic and marched down busy Columbus Avenue in San Francisco Sunday afternoon chanting “fight Asian hate” and “justice for our elders.”
Many recent anti-Asian-hate marches have stayed on sidewalks or within parks. Still, rally organizers said playing nice, following rules, and maintaining the “model minority” image have got them nowhere.
They’re changing their tactics, becoming disruptive and aggressive to make their demands heard.”
Officer Kathryn Winters of the San Francisco police confirmed during a press conference on Sunday that the incident is being investigated to find whether it was racially motivated, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.
According to KGO-TV, Winters told reporters that the incident had good pictures and video. “In this event, police could quickly find and recognize the culprit. So, some excellent police officers are working in the field.”
Residents gathered in the streets to express their concerns about the surge of violent attacks on Asians and Asian Americans on the same day that Yearby was arrested.
