Favors was born Derrick Bernard Favors on July 15, 1991 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was one of his single mother’s three children; Deandra Favors, who despite having to work multiple jobs to support her family, was always able to guide her son to the good part instead of allowing him to drag himself into Southside gang life of Atlanta, a city heavily populated with crimes.

Growing up, Favors was very attached to his schoolwork instead of playing sports despite his obvious athleticism. He was like that because he doubted his talents, so he didn’t want to let his education go to waste. His AAU coach was of the same opinion, as he was reportedly the person who always dragged Favor to court to practice his sport. What then turned out to be a motivation for him was when he came across Kobe Bryant’s children’s book which was about his rise to stardom. He was driven by the history of the Los Angeles Laker legend and never looked back.

At South Atlanta High School, Derrick Favors was considered the best high school basketball player in the nation. In his senior year, he averaged 28.1 points, 13.3 rebounds, 5.0 blocks, 3.0 steals and 2.0 assists per game as he guided his school to the Georgia championship. In his junior year of college, Favors averaged 12.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game to help his team advance to the ACC Tournament Finals where they lost to Duke University. Favors was later named to the ACC All Freshman Team, along with ACC Rookie of the Year, after which he announced he was giving up his final three years of college to enter the 2010 NBA draft where he was selected third overall by the New Jersey Nets..

Derrick Favors spent less than a year in New Jersey before being traded to the Utah Jazz in February 2011, though he still managed to earn NBA rookie second-team honors. Favors have been an important part of Jazz’s set-up ever since.

Derrick Favors never knew or met his father, Johnnie Parker, when he was growing up. Deandra, the mother of Paker and Favor, had an affair with the two Eastern Airlines employees in Atlanta in the late 80s and early 90s.
