Debbie Gibson recorded her debut album, “Out of the Blue,” with producer Fred Zarr in 1987, while performing at nightclubs across the United States. Within four weeks, they composed, recorded, and produced the album.
The album’s four songs reached the top five on the Hot 100 chart: “Only in My Dreams,” “Shake Your Love,” “Out of the Blue,” and the number-one hit “Foolish Beat.” “Staying Together,” another song, peaked at number 22.
Gibson broke the record for the youngest artist to compose, produce, and perform a Billboard number-one single at the age of 16, as acknowledged by the 1988 Guinness Book of World Records.
She is still the youngest female performer to achieve this milestone. “Out of the Blue” was a hugely successful record, and Gibson was a big hit in the UK and Southeast Asia, where she played in crowded stadiums on her “Out of the Blue” tour. “Out of the Blue” had reached triple platinum status by the end of 1988.
The RIAA certified the music video compilation “Out of the Blue” platinum, while the concert tour video gained double platinum certification. Gibson sang the national anthem for Game 1 of the Major League Baseball World Series in October 1988.
