A demo cassette of Deborah Ann Gibson’s original song, “Only in My Dreams,” was given to an Atlantic Records executive, which marked the beginning of her journey. As a result, she signed a development contract and started a promotional tour of clubs across the country.
Gibson concentrated on expanding her songwriting catalog between the end of 1986 and the start of 1987 while performing at clubs and finishing high school. She was joined by her mother, Diane Gibson, who also functioned as her manager, during these performances at various venues.
After being made available as a single in December 1986, “Only in My Dreams” quickly acquired popularity. In September 1987, it debuted at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 list.
As a result of the single’s success, Atlantic Records and Gibson worked together to finish her debut album.
Gibson released “Shake Your Love” as her follow-up song after “Only in My Dreams,” which was a success and peaked at number five on the Billboard chart.
Paula Abdul choreographed the “Shake Your Love” music video, which was the first time MTV came to Gibson to film a video.
