Debuting in 1987 in Portland, Oregon, Dead Moon was a punk rock band that existed until 2006. With Fred Cole on vocals and guitar, the group also featured bassist Toody Cole, Fred’s wife, and drummer Andrew Loomis as well as other members. Dark and lovelorn themes were intertwined with elements from punk and country music to create a stripped-down sound by Dead Moon, who were veterans of Portland’s indie rock scene. A mono lathe was utilised for The Kingsmen’s rendition of “Louie Louie,” and Fred Cole engineered and masterized the majority of the band’s recordings. Initial releases, such as In the Graveyard, were made via the Tombstone Records label, which was named after the musical equipment shop that Fred and Toody owned at the time.

 As a result of their success, they were signed to the German company Music Maniac Records and embarked on a successful tour of Europe. Unknown Passage: The Dead Moon Story was a 2004 documentary produced by a U.S. filmmaking team (Kate Fix and Jason Summers) that screened in independent theatres across the country, as well as in New Zealand and at the Melbourne International Film Festival, before being released on DVD in the fall of 2006. The band Dead Moon has recorded for labels such as Empty Records, although the majority of their recordings are on Music Maniac Records in the United Kingdom and Tombstone Records in the United States, respectively. It has also offered inexpensive mastering and duplicating services for other artists, acting more as a cooperative than as a promotional tool for those musicians.

 In spite of the fact that Fred and Toody are in their fifties, they showed no signs of slowing down on their 2004 album Dead Ahead, continuing to tour the world until 2006, when the collection Echoes of the Past was released. Dead Moon announced their disbandment in December 2006, at the conclusion of the Echoes of the Past tour. It was on November 26, 2006, when they performed at the Vera club in Groningen. Fred and Toody are the owners of the Tombstone General Store in Clackamas, Oregon, and are presently developing a retail complex in the surrounding area. “It’s Okay” was recorded by Pearl Jam, and the band often uses it as a transition between their songs “Daughter” and “It’s Okay.” The songs “Diamonds in the Rough” and “Running Out of Time” have both been covered by Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, as has “Diamonds in the Rough.” 

With Portland punk musician Kelly Halliburton, whose father performed in a band called “Albatross” with Fred in 1972, of Severed Head of State, Defiance, and previously Murder Disco X, Fred and Toody created a new band called Pierced Arrows, which was later renamed. When Pierced Arrows debuted on May 18, 2007 at Portland’s Ash Street Saloon with the reconstituted Poison Idea, it was a huge success. With Terry French (vocals), Becca D. (lead guitar), and Marc Nelson, Andrew Loomis is currently a member of a band named The Shiny Things from Longview, Washington, where he plays drums (guitar).
