biography

David West was born David Moorer West to Harriet and Amos West on August 29, 1980 in Teaneck, New Jersey. He attended Garner Magnet High School in Garner, North Carolina before moving to Chatham, Virginia, where he enrolled at Hargrave Military Academy. He played basketball for his school and earned all state first-team honors as a senior.

He then attended Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he played for the Xavier Musketeers basketball team. West dominated his freshman year as he led the Atlantic 10 Conference in rebounding and finished the season as his team’s fourth-top scorer. He was subsequently named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.

David West continued his dominance in his sophomore year, this time leading the team in points, rebounds and blocks. He also had five 20-point and 20-rebound games that season, making him the undisputed winner of the A-10 Player of the Year award. He won the award again in his junior and senior years, becoming the first three-time recipient.

His other notable accomplishments in college include being a three-time first-team All-Atlantic 10 by the United States Basketball Writers Association (2003), a Consensus First-Team All-American (2003), an AP National Player of the Year (2003), and a Voted National Player of the Year.

After a highly successful collegiate career, West was selected with the 18th overall pick by the New Orleans Hornets in the 2003 NBA Draft. After two seasons acclimating to professional basketball, West finally lived up to expectations as his performances in the 2005-06 season earned him second place in the voting for the NBA Most Improved Player Award.

His stats continued to improve the following season as he recorded thirteen 20-point games and five 30-point games. This continued into the 2007-08 season and resulted in his being selected for the NBA All-Star Game. During the 2008-09 season, West averaged 21 career points per game, leading to his second All-Star appearance.

David West played a total of eight seasons at New Orleans before retiring from the final year of his contract in June 2011 to become a free agent. After getting out of NBA suspension in 2011, West joined the Indiana Pacers on a two-year, $20 million contract. At the end of that contract, West resigned with the team as it had built a team capable of challenging LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference. However, after losing at the Conference Finals, West resigned from his contract to become a free agent again.

His next stop was San Antonio, where he played only one year for the Spurs before they settled on the Golden State Warriors. He was a key bench player at the side as they entered the playoffs as the best starting base before winning the 2017 NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
