David William Sanborn, born July 30, 1945, is a well-known alto saxophonist from the United States. While he has experimented with a variety of musical genres during his career, his solo recordings frequently incorporate elements of jazz, instrumental pop, and R&B.

He released his debut solo album, “Taking Off,” in 1975, despite the fact that he had been playing the saxophone since high school.

Sanborn is widely regarded as one of the most commercially successful American saxophonists to emerge since the 1980s, with reviewer Scott Yannow describing him as “the most influential saxophonist on pop, R&B, and crossover players of the past 20 years.”

While he is frequently identified with smooth jazz, which receives major radio broadcasts, Sanborn has stated a dislike for the genre and his relationship to it.

Sanborn got the opportunity to perform with renowned blues performers Albert King and Little Milton at the age of 14. In 1967, he joined the Paul Butterfield blues band and began to explore the blues genre.

Between 1967 and 1971, Sanborn lent his saxophone skills to four Butterfield albums, both as a member of the horn section and as a soloist. Notably, Sanborn performed with the band at the Woodstock Music Festival in Bethel, New York, in the early hours of Monday, August 18, 1969.

David Sanborn Health

Sanborn began playing the saxophone as part of a rehabilitation routine to strengthen his chest muscles and enhance his breathing after contracting polio as a young child. But Sanborn’s inspiration to pursue music professionally came from listening to Ray Charles’ songs and falling in love with its exhilarating fusion of jazz, R&B, and gospel.

He was also influenced and inspired by the music and culture of St. Louis, where he grew up, as well as the Chicago musicians who traveled there to perform.
