Steel Pulse’s founding member, English rhythm guitarist, and lead singer David “Dread” Hinds (born 15 June 1956 in Handsworth, Birmingham, England) is a Grammy Award-winning reggae band. Hinds’ parents immigrated to the UK from Jamaica in the mid 1950s, along with a large number of other Jamaicans and British Caribbean islands, to help rebuild post-World War II Britain. He began elementary school at the age of five and finished his education by 1974.
During that time, Jamaican music had a significant impact on Hinds’ outlook on life in the years to come. “I recall each of my older siblings coming over with the newest style of music and dance as well as what was going socially and politically on the island,” Hinds said in an interview with Afropop Worldwide. Hinds met band co-founder Basil Gabbidon at Handsworth Wood Boys secondary school, with whom he would subsequently form Steel Pulse in 1975. Hinds has written songs for a number of films, including “Can’t Stand The Heat,” which was included in Spike Lee’s film “Do The Right Thing” (1989). He’s also recorded two solo songs on the Heartical label in France.
