David Burtka Husband, Gay

Six months after Burtka’s initial appearance on How I Met Your Mother, claims surfaced that he was cast because of a romantic relationship with one of the show’s stars, actor Neil Patrick Harris.

As a result of the speculation around this article, Harris revealed publicly that he was gay in a cover story for People Weekly Magazine. Burtka remained silent about the story, though Harris later revealed that he and Burtka were moving in together.

Burtka and Harris attended the Emmy Awards in September 2007 as an openly acknowledged couple for the first time, an appearance that Harris discussed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Burtka’s mother died of cancer in May 2008.

Burtka and Harris first sang on stage together on February 4, 2009, at a benefit for the LGBT Community Center in New York, singing a duet from Rent.

Burtka first appeared on television in 2002, in a cameo role on The West Wing. After that, there were guest appearances on Crossing Jordan. Burtka made his Broadway debut in the 2003 revival of Gypsy, starring Bernadette Peters, as Tulsa.

He won the 2001 Clarence Derwent Award for a most promising male performer for his role as The Boy in Edward Albee’s The Play About the Baby, which he premiered in the United States.

Burtka first played Matt in the musical The Opposite of Sex in 2004, and he reprised the role in the work’s East Coast debut in 2006.

Burtka starred in seven episodes of How I Met Your Mother as “Scooter,” Lily Aldrin’s (Alyson Hannigan) former high school lover who had not yet moved on from their split.
