David Attenborough Religion Agnostic Belief
David Attenborough, the renowned naturalist and broadcaster, identifies as agnostic.
He finds it challenging to reconcile the existence of a merciful God with the presence of suffering in the natural world.
When Creationists highlight the beauty of hummingbirds and flowers as evidence of divine creation, Attenborough points to the Onchocerca volvulus, a parasitic worm that can blind innocent children.
He questions whether a compassionate God would create such a creature.
Attenborough firmly believes that the diversity of life on our planet can be best explained through evolution.
He sees ample evidence for organic evolution and considers the method chosen by a supreme being, should one exist, to bring the natural world into existence.
Attenborough has actively opposed the inclusion of creationism in the curriculum of UK state-funded independent schools.
He argues that viewing humans as dominators of the environment, as promoted by the Book of Genesis, has led to environmental devastation.
Attenborough considers evolution a historical fact and opposes the teaching of creationism and intelligent design alongside it.
While he doesn’t claim to know definitively, he believes that evolution is not incompatible with the existence of a higher power.
