David Zinczenko Recipes

Give dessert a healthy makeover with these no-added-sugar recipes

David Zinczenko will show you how to have your cake and eat it, too.

Fatwas my inevitable destiny; how could it not be? I had grown up as a lonely, latchkey kid with a serious sugar addiction; my best friends were the Three Musketeers and all I knew of the world outside my suburban Pennsylvania neighborhood was French vanilla, English toffee, and Dutch chocolate.

When my 200-pound self went lumbering into the Navy Reserves after college, I could see the disgust on the faces of the basic training instructors: Who sent us this leaky old tugboat? And how the heck are we supposed to turn it into a battleship?

I worked hard to get back in shape. But the real reason I lost weight fast — and kept it off — was that I gave up added sugars.

Added sugars are hidden in everything from our pasta sauce to our bread, and if you give them up, you’ll feel happier and healthier. That’s why I had to write the “Zero Sugar Cookbook.”

It’s full of 100+ recipes, all made with zero added sugars — including the desserts. Yes, now I could have my cake “yes, cake” and eat it, too. Here are four of my favorite recipes from the book, every one sweet.

With these chocolate-almond clusters, you can have a no-guilt grab-and-go dessert that lasts all week long, right in the fridge. The matcha adds a boost of caffeine, so you can even enjoy one in the morning.

You won’t want to eat just one of these cookies because they’re so delicious, but one will satisfy you because of the belly-filling fiber.

This is ice cream without the added cups of sugar — and you’ll never notice it’s missing. The dates and berries provide sweetness. The best part: It’s dairy-free, so you won’t feel bloated after eating it.

Most muesli is just sugar-coated oats. In this recipe, you get the heartiness of the classic breakfast but it’s not cloyingly sweet. The result is apple pie for breakfast.

The Zero Sugar Diet is a healthy, tasty, easy-to-follow eating plan – created by David Zinczenko, the former editorial director of Men’s Fitness in the US – designed to bring your hormones into balance, assist liver function and take away food cravings while delivering rapid weight loss.

The Zero Sugar Diet requires lots of whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed grains; lean, healthy, satisfying, sugar-free foods like eggs, turkey, chicken and fish; and just the right amount of sugar-free good fats, like guacamole.

The dishes here – a sampling of a full day’s worth of food found in the Zero Sugar Diet book – replace simple carbs with high-fiber foods, so try them and you’ll see your belly starting to flatten within days. You’ll also feel more energized. Are you in? We thought so.

Pretty simple? That’s the idea behind Eat This, Not That! by David Zinczenko (formerly editor of Men’s Health) and chef Matt Goulding.

Throughout the book, they focus on taking in fewer calories than your body burns every day. You do that by swapping higher-calorie foods with items that are lower in fat and calories.

What You Can Eat

Pretty much anything, including bread, fancy coffee, dessert, and steak. There’s a lot of information on eating out and avoiding calorie overload at restaurants.

Some of the program’s top restaurant swaps:

Burger: Steak ‘n Shake double steakburger with cheese (440 calories) instead of Five Guys Little Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, onions, and mayo (673 calories)

Salad: Chili’s Santa Fe Chicken Salad (670 calories) instead of Chevy’s Fresh Mex grilled chicken fajita salad (1220 calories)

Pizza: Domino’s Artisan – Italian Sausage & Pepper Trio (320 calories) instead of Pizza Hut Italian Sausage & Red Onion p
