Dave Gold (June 5, 1932 – April 22, 2013) was a businessman in the United States who founded the 99 Cents Only discount shop chain. Gold was born to Russian immigrants who owned a general shop in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1945, his family relocated to Los Angeles. Gold graduated from Los Angeles High School and enrolled at Los Angeles City College, but quit school when his father had a heart attack and left to manage his family’s liquor business. 99 cents appeared to be a “magic number,” according to Gold. “It never sold out when I put wine or cheese on sale for $1.02 or 98 cents. When I placed a 99 cent sign on anything, it sold quickly “In a 2003 interview with The Los Angeles Times, he remarked. In 1982, Gold established the first 99 Cents Only shop. The $1 shop idea was originally thought to be a retail cemetery for expired or damaged goods. Gold kept his shop bright and well-organized, and he built connections with suppliers by bribing them with bagels and cream cheese on occasion. Gold died of a heart attack at his home in Los Angeles’ Mid-Wilshire neighbourhood.
