She was last seen alive leaving a party on foot early the morning of August 31, 2003, the start of Labor Day weekend.
Her body was discovered near a Las Cruces landfill the next day after her former roommate reported her missing after she failed to return home.
She’d been strangled, sexually assaulted, and had part of her body burned.
Katie did return home, according to evidence, and her shoe was discovered outside her bedroom window, where there appeared to be a struggle.
According to Patreon, on August 31st, 2003 a Las Cruces couple noticed a woman lying in the desert, unresponsive. The body was naked from the waist down and had been sexually assaulted.
Her neck was bruised, and she had Petechiae in her eyes. Her hands and arms were covered in defensive wounds. Her back was also burned, according to investigators.
It appears that the suspect used an accelerant and set fire to the body in an attempt to destroy evidence. It became clear that the woman’s body had been dumped there after being assaulted and murdered elsewhere.

Avila had provided a DNA sample after being sentenced to prison for burglary, resisting arrest, and fraudulent refusal to return leased assets.
Avila later confessed to killing Sepich, claiming he nearly hit her with his truck the night she was killed. He stated that he pulled over to ensure she was okay, then followed her to ensure she arrived home safely.
He “suddenly lost it,” according to Avila, and attacked her, raping and strangling her. According to the investigators, it was a chance encounter.
Finally, in 2007, Avila pleaded guilty to multiple felonies and was sentenced to 69 years in prison.
