The case remained unsolved for over three years until the DNA of a 27-year-old Las Cruces resident, Gabriel Avila, was submitted for another case. He confessed to killing Katie after he almost struck her with his truck.
Gabriel Avila pleaded guilty to several felonies in 2007 and was sentenced to 69 years in prison.
