Date set for the 2017 federal election

The date of Kenya’s 2017 presidential election was announced by a committee composed of fourteen members of the Jubilee and CORD.

The committee approved the conduct of the elections on Tuesday, August 8, 2017.

Nonetheless, the CORD department at the meeting called for voters to be re-registered, insisting that the voting register had been ruined due to various problems.

The ruling party, on the other hand, argued that a handful of issues should be investigated, but they did not justify re-registration.

During the meeting, the opposition party also called for the results that would be announced at the polling stations to be used as the final results to reduce the likelihood of manipulation.

The coalition also raised concerns about using the existing electoral body in the upcoming elections, accusing it of corruption.

There is speculation that the current IEBC body will be restored

On the contrary, Moses Kuria, who is in the committee, addressed the opposition party’s claim and urged them to support their claim. He added that the protest is only aimed at blacking out the commission unless it alleges something substantive to support it.

The governing coalition has blasted CORD’s recommendation that the parties commit to the reconstitution of the IEBC.

The 14-member committee was set up after the anti-IEBC protest that saw numerous deaths and violence in his country.

CORD, headed by Raila Odinga, stated that the electoral body could not oversee free and fair elections in 2017.

Raila said it was an initiative, following the rejection of the commission, which concluded that the IEBC is deeply corrupt and has the potential to rig the actual outcome of the 2017 general election.
