Dasha Nekrasova (born 19 February 1991) is a Belarusian-American actress and podcaster. She starred in the movies Wobble Palace (2018) and Softness of Bodies and co-hosts the podcast Red Scare. In 2018 she became known as “Sailor Socialism” after an interview with an InfoWars reporter that went viral.
Early life
Nekrasova was born in Minsk, Belarus to parents who worked as acrobats. She emigrated to the United States with her parents when she was four.
Nekrasova settled in Las Vegas, Nevada, and attended high school at Las Vegas Academy of the Arts, graduating in 2008. She attended Mills College, studying sociology and anthropology.
In 2015 Nekrasova self-published a book of poetry, Feeling Worse About the Same.
Career
Nekrasova appeared in a number of low-budget short films, features and music videos (for artists such as Antwon, TV Girl, DJ Dodger Stadium, Yumi Zouma and Future Death) before her breakthrough role in Wobble Palace, which she co-wrote with director Eugene Kotlyarenko. The film was positively received by critics and nominated for the 2018 SXSW Adam Yauch Hörnblowér Award. The Hollywood Reporter praised her performance in the film Softness of Bodies, and she will appear in Black Earth, the directorial debut of Riley Sweeney Lynch, son of David Lynch.
Nekrasova is known for her political commentary. She received viral attention after the right-wing media outlet InfoWars interviewed her in March 2018 at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, where she was promoting Wobble Palace. Her dismissive attitude and Japanese schoolgirl outfit earned her the sobriquet “Sailor Socialism”. The clip was featured on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
Nekrasova also co-hosts the Red Scare podcast, which covers politics and culture. A profile of Nekrasova and her co-hosts in The Cut described Red Scare as “a critique of feminism, and capitalism, from deep inside the culture they’ve spawned.” Nekrasova is a promoter of “Venmo feminism”. The show has featured guest appearances by several notable writers, artists, social commentators and leftist figures, including Angela Nagle, Vanessa Place, Simon Reynolds, Juliana Huxtable, Ariana Reines and Chapo Trap House‘s Amber A’Lee Frost.
Dasha is also known for her appearances on the podcast Cum Town; her former fiancé, Adam Friedland, is one of its co-hosts. She has also appeared as a guest host and interviewee on Chapo Trap House, The Special Without Brett Davis, The Sitdown w/ Mike Recine, The Book Sluts Podcast, and Not Really Podcast.
In 2019, she appeared in Mr. Robot and had a voice-over performance as Klaasje in the role-playing video game Disco Elysium.
