Darryl Sutter is considered one of the best ice hockey players and the current head coach of the Calgary Flames; off the field, Darryl is a dedicated family man. The Canadian native is married to Wanda Sutter, and the pair has three children.
Sutter has coached the Flames, San Jose Sharks, the Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, and Los Angeles Kings. Similarly, in 2012 and 2014, he led the Kings to Stanley Cup victories. Previously, a head coach who held positions with the Flames was a general manager. For his 2nd term as the team’s head coach, he returned to the Flames in 2021.
He started his coaching career with the Chicago Blackhawks, serving as an assistant coach under head coach “Bob Murdoch.” The Blackhawks Murdoch finished with a record of 30-41-9 & fell to the St. Louis Blues in the division semifinals by a score of 4 games to 1.
Sutter made 59 draft selections for the “Calgary Flames” during his eight drafts from 2003 to 2010, of which 33 players never appeared in a National Hockey League game. Darryl Sutter, a head coach, first met his wife, Wanda Sutter, in a recreational softball league. They quickly grew to be close friends, and their relationship eventually led to their marriage. On August 12, 1980, the pair tied the knot in Viking, Alberta.
Wanda and Darryl have been married for more than 42 years, and at some of the most crucial stages in his career, Wanda was able to observe her husband’s profession develop.
Likewise, when Sutter was appointed by the Anaheim Ducks on July 2, 2019, at the suggestion of head coach Dallas Eakins his wife Wanda was able to cheer him. Sutter reconnected with Ducks general manager and old Blackhawks teammate Bob Murray in this position.

Jessica Sutter
Darryl and Wanda’s first child is Jessica. After five years of marriage, the pair welcomed Jessica into their household as their first child. Jessica, aka Jessie Sutter, was born on April 17, 1985, and she graduated in 2003 from San Jose’s Leland High School.
Additionally, she has two younger brothers, Brett and Christopher. Brett is two years younger than Jessie & having born on June 2, 1987. He is a professional ice hockey player who competes for the Ontario Reign of the NHL & comes from a family of ice hockey players.
Brett Sutter
Brett is an American Hockey League player for the Calgary Wranglers. The Calgary Flames selected him in the sixth round of the 2005 National Hockey League Entry Draft. During the 2008–09 season, he made his NHL debut for the Flames, scoring a goal in his 1st game.
He began his career in 2007–2008. Additionally, Sutter was one of the Flames’ final cuts before the start of the season; he was then allowed to play for their American Hockey League club, the Quad City Flames, where he amassed four goals & ten points in 75 games.
As the season progressed, Sutter saw an increase in ice time as he grew accustomed to the quick pace of the professional game. He went back to Quad City at the start of the AHL’s 2008–09 campaign. Before joining the Flames, he played in 28 games & had one goal and six assists.
Christopher Sutter
He is the youngest child of Wanda and Darryl Sutter. He was born on March 30, 1993, making him around eight years younger than his oldest sibling. Soon after Chris was born, his parents received some heartbreaking news.
According to the physicians, he would not have survived very long, as he had health problems, including Down syndrome. If he did, Darryl Sutter’s son would probably grow up blind and deaf & in an institution his entire life.
Chris also underwent numerous ear procedures, having bones inserted in both ears. One of his eyes is ordinary in terms of vision, but the other has terrible eyesight.
Darryl Sutter Has Six Siblings In His Family
Darryl Sutter was born to parents Louis John and Grace Sutter in Viking, Alberta, Canada. He was raised together with his six siblings. The Sutter family is one of the most recognizable families in the National Hockey League.
In the late 1970s & early 1980s, six brothers: Brent, Rich, Darryl, Brian, Duane, & Ron, made it to the NHL. Similarly, Brian, Darryl & Brent are three of four brothers who have pursued careers as coaches & general managers.
Louis John Sutter, Darryl’s father, passed away on February 10, 2005, at age 73, after a protracted illness. Several well-known hockey luminaries attended his burial.
