The late Darryl Hunt (born 1965) is an African American man from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, who was wrongfully convicted in 1984 of the rape and murder of a young white newspaper copy editor named Deborah Sykes, but who was later exonerated after DNA and other forms of evidence proved that Hunt was not the perpetrator. He was sentenced to 19 and a half years in jail before being released after a review and exoneration.
His case was considered a modern-day cause célèbre, and it was claimed to have “helped define racial relations in Winston-Salem for more than two decades.” Darryl Hunt is now a practising Muslim who is active in the Innocence Project as well as his own organisation, The Darryl Hunt Project for Freedom and Justice, among other organisations. This initiative is dedicated to “informing the public about faults in the criminal justice system, campaigning for individuals who have been unjustly imprisoned as a consequence of those flaws, and offering resources and assistance for those who are attempting to rebuild their lives,” according to its website.
