Darron Lee Career

Darron Lee High School

Darron attended the New Albany High School while he was in grade six. While in school, he played as a quarterback, wide receiver, safety, and return specialist. He led his team to the state semifinals as seniors but lost to Trotwood-Madison.

Also, Darron played for the Eagles making them complete as the regional semifinalist. He was named first-team Associated Press Division 2 All-State. He was with a record of five interceptions for over 1700 yards of offense and 21 touchdowns.

Playing for the Eagles Darron competed in both indoor and outdoor track and field teams. However, for him to complete off-season football, he played limited for the 2013 Indoor season. He was rated by Rivals.com as a 3-star recruit. On May 26, he committed to Ohio State University to play college football.

Darron Lee College

Darron played in two games as a true freshman in 2013, before suffering an injury that caused him to receive a medical redshirt. Prior to his redshirt freshman season in 2014, he switched to linebacker and became a starter. He was named the Defensive MVP of the 2015 Sugar Bowl after he recorded seven tackles and two sacks. On January 2, 2016, he stated via Twitter that he was entering the 2016 NFL Draft.

Darron Lee NFL

Prior to the NFL Combine, the majority of NFL draft experts and scouts projected Darron to be a mid-to-late first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. At the NFL scouting combine, he solidified his position as a potential first-round pick.

It was by putting up solid numbers in the combined drills. Darron finished first among all linebackers in the 40-yard dash and broad jump, finished third among linebackers in the short shuttle. Also, he finished fifth among linebackers in the vertical jump.

On March 11, 2016, Darron competed in Ohio State a pro day. However, he opted to stand on his combined numbers and only performed positional drills. He attended pre-draft visits with multiple teams. These including the Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, New York Jets, and Minnesota Vikings. At the conclusion of the pre-draft process, he was projected to be a first-round pick by NFL draft experts and scouts.

Darron Lee New York Jets

Darron was selected by The New York Jets in the first round (20th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft. He was the second linebacker drafted in 2016, behind Georgia outside linebacker Leonard Floyd (9th overall).

Darron entered training camp slated as a starting inside linebacker after the Jets opted not to re-sign Erin Henderson. Head coach Todd Bowles named him and Demario Davis the starting inside linebackers to begin the regular season. They were together with outside linebackers Jordan Jenkins and Josh Martin.

Darron entered camp as a starting inside linebacker and was named the starter to begin the regular season. He started the season together with Avery Williamson and starting outside linebackers Josh Martin and Jordan Jenkins. On May 3, 2019, the Jets declined the fifth-year option on Lee’s contract, making him a free agent in 2020.

Darron Lee Suspension

A cornerback in high school, Darron had the reputation of a linebacker who excelled in coverage but struggled against the run. A 3-4 middle linebacker with the Jets, the newest Chiefs defender likely will compete with Anthony Hitchens and Dorian O’Daniel for reps as a 4-3 outside linebacker. He is a low-risk acquisition with potential.

Because he was suspended the last four games of the 2018 season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Darron’s 2019 base salary of $1.84 million is not guaranteed, and his deal expires after the season.

As they try to revamp a defense that finished next to last in total yardage and passing yards in 2018, the Chiefs took advantage of a chaotic Jets organization. In what many have labeled as a bizarre power struggle, head coach Adam Gase has taken over as interim general manager. He took for recently-fired Mike Maccagnan, the man who hired him in January.

Darron Lee Trade

Teams knew Darron was expendable because the Jets, who also have a solid linebacker in Avery Williamson, signed his replacement, middle linebacker C.J. Mosley. Apart from that, they made him the highest-paid inside linebacker in the league (both in terms of guaranteed money and overall contract value). The Jets gave Mosley a five-year, $85 million free-agent contract with a $7.5 million signing bonus this offseason.

Darron was a bit of a disappointment in his first two seasons, but he played his best in 2018 before the suspension ended his year. He had three interceptions, an impressive total for a linebacker, including a pick-six in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.

The 6-1, 232-pound Darron was one of the most athletic defensive players in the 2016 class. He recorded 4.48 speed in the 40 and had the fastest 10-yard split of any linebacker at the NFL Combine (1.54) and longest broad jump (11 feet, one inch) of any linebacker. Those measures allowed him to be strong in coverage.

Darron Lee Kansas City Chiefs

New York Jets made an announcement on May 3, 2019. The Jets declined the fifth-year option on Darron’s contract, making him a free agent in 2020. The Jets traded Lee to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2020 sixth-round draft pick. It was on May 15, 2019.

Darron Lee Contract

Darron is much more affordable. He’s in the last year of his four-year, $10.2 million contracts. This year his cap hit is just $1,843,861. The question is what the Chiefs will get for that money. His four-year contract is due at the end of this year.

The contract covered his insurances, health, and his salary. The New York Jets traded Darron for Mosley. He was given a five-year, $85 million free-agent contract with a $7.5 million signing bonus this offseason.
