Daniel Waters Screenwriting Credits

Daniel started writing a famous column for his high school journal called “Troubled Waters,” where he wrote fictional stories about his real-life classmates — not unlike the script that appeared in his screenplay of Heathers. His column made him particularly popular, leading to screenplays of a career writing.

He went to prominence in 1988 to write the Heathers black comedy for which he was awarded an Edgar Award in 1990. Heathers was an effort to write about the real nature of adolescents and society at high school.

He served as co-writer on Ford Fairlane’s comedy The Adventures over the next four years, scripted Batman Returns ‘ sequel, and then wrote the movies Hudson Hawk (for which here-teamed with Michael Lehmann, Heathers director) and Demolition Man. For both Hudson Hawk and Ford Fairlane, he got the “Worst Screenplay” Golden Raspberry Award.

Daniel Waters Turn as a Director

In 2001, Waters made his directorial debut with Happy Campers, another teen comedy in a black vein that, after a long delay, was released straight to DVD. His follow-up, Sex and Death 101, a hybrid of science fiction, dark comedy, and romantic thriller, won the Golden Space Needle Award for Best Director at the 2007 Seattle International Film Festival. It was released theatrically on April 4, 2008, in New York and Los Angeles. The film reteamed Waters with Heathers star Winona Ryder.
