Daniel Mobley, a 22-year veteran of the department, was hit by a car about 9 a.m. while responding to a crash involving another DeKalb officer near the Williams Street exit. He was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, but pronounced dead on arrival, DeKalb police said. Mobley was 44.

Mobley started at the department in 1998 and was described as highly respected – someone who was “routinely utilized as the Officer-in-Charge based on his exceptional work ethic.”

It was that ethic that led to his promotion to sergeant in 2017 – a rank he held working in the north-central precinct of the department. His work led to numerous letters of commendation as he served his community.

Outside of his career, Mobley was also described as a family man and a father. He also had hobbies, the department said, adding that he was a Ford fan and loved to work on his cars when he had time.

These were just a few of the stories told by DeKalb Police on Saturday as they shared what they will most remember about their friend and brother in blue – someone whose life ended suddenly and far too soon.

The tragic incident happened when Sgt. Daniel Mobley, a 22-year veteran of the department, was struck by a car at nine in the morning of Saturday, January 2, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. As per DeKalb police, Mobley was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, but could not be saved.

According to Police Chief Mirtha Ramos, “Today is a sad day as the DeKalb County Police Department lost one of its guardian angels. We will miss him dearly and our hearts go out to his family.” The chief also mentioned that the 44-year-old reached the location for “supervisory investigation” and as he came out of his patrol vehicle, a car hit him. “The entire Department of Public Safety sends their heartfelt prayers and sympathy to the family and colleagues of Sergeant Mobley,” the state agency said.

Ramos added, “The law enforcement community as a whole is hurting. When you have officers flying into the hospital — not even in uniform because it’s their day off — to show their respects, that means he earned that respect.” She urged drivers to slow down when approaching vehicles stopped parallel to the road. “Not just (for) law enforcement, but even when you see someone changing a tire. We lose people daily on our highways and we just need to pay closer attention,” she said.

Governor Brian Kemp also extended his condolences as he tweeted, “Heartbreaking news. Please join our family in praying for the friends and loved ones of Sergeant Mobley. May the Lord be a comfort to them and his fellow officers in this difficult time.

DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond released a statement after Mobley’s tragic death that noted, “On behalf of the residents and employees of DeKalb County and the Board of Commissioners, I express our deepest sympathy and offer our prayers to the family and friends of police Sgt. Daniel Mobley who gave his life in the line of duty this morning.”
