Dan Skeldon Meteorologist

Dan earned a bachelor of science degree in meteorology from Cornell University in 1998, and his broadcasting career has taken him to the snowy climates of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Capital District of Upstate New York over the last two decades. Most of his nearly two-decade weather tenure was spent as chief meteorologist for NBC40 News in South Jersey, leading the Jersey Shore through winter’s nor’easters as well as Hurricanes Irene and Sandy.

Dan Skeldon American Meteorological Society

Dan earned the American Meteorological Society(AMS) Seal of Approval for broadcast meteorologists and has spoken at the National Hurricane Conference in New Orleans. Since he’s just a big kid when it comes to blizzards and thunderstorms, Dan loves visiting schools to spread his passion for weather with area kids, having visited hundreds of schools over his career.

Dan Skeldon Weather

From hiking to biking, Dan loves the outdoors and any activity that allows him to keep a watchful eye to the sky. Standing at 6 foot 5 inches tall, he’s normally first to feel the raindrops and snowflakes and often has his head in the clouds.

Regarding the sometimes inexact science of weather forecasting, Dan likes to joke: “Hated or loved is the weatherman, for skies that are rainy or blue; for let it be known when a forecast is blown, he shares in the misery too.”

Hurricane Joaquin: Up the coast or out to sea?

Hurricane Joaquin is a formidable Category 4 major hurricane and has winds of 130 mph per the 5 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center. Further strengthening is still possible, and Joaquin could see winds as strong as 140 mph as it slams parts of the Bahamas over the next 24 hours.

That much is certain. But over the last few days, plenty of uncertainty has plagued forecasters with respect to the future track of Joaquin. However, certain encouraging trends developed last night, as the out to sea idea, which initially looked like an outlier, began to gain traction. Those trends continue this evening.

The official National Hurricane Center forecast track continues to trend east with each update, and that trend may very well continue with future forecasts. The next update from the hurricane center comes out at 11 p.m. this evening. South Jersey is expected to see occasional rain, wind, and tidal flooding over the next 24 hours, but not due to Joaquin. Any direct impacts from Joaquin look increasingly unlikely as the storm track shifts farther offshore.

Several computer models run that had initially shown an East Coast landfall have trended farther out to sea with the forecast track for Joaquin. If that trend continues, then the “trend is our friend” in South Jersey, and Joaquin would pass safely offshore, several hundred miles to our east. However, brisk winds, rip currents, high surf, and tidal flooding are all likely at the shore through the weekend.

Future trends will continue to be monitored, and residents of South Jersey and all along the East Coast are hopeful the eastward shift in the forecast track continues indefinitely. Municipalities across South Jersey are making plans in case Hurricane Joaquin hits. Here are the latest updates:

“We’re gearing up pretty good now,” said acting Atlantic City Fire Chief Scott Evans of storm preparations on Thursday afternoon. “I’m feeling comfortable.” He said they are “hurricane hardening” the fire stations, which includes moving sensitive equipment to higher ground and beefing up support for water operations.

Some equipment will be moved to the Convention Center. In Chelsea Heights, the Surf Stadium will be used as a staging area. “We’re reviewing our personnel rosters, briefing our management team and preparing to add additional staff and support operations,” he said.

The department will also assist with evacuating residents, if necessary. Mayor Don Guardian will detail plans at a 3:45 p.m. news conference, Chief of Staff Chris Filiciello said.

Early Thursday morning: Cumberland County’s Office of Emergency Management advised municipal OEMs to prepare their plans for emergencies, as well as test generators and radios. They also advised towns to take photos of areas prone to flooding for reference.
