James Dalton Trumbo (December 9, 1905 – September 10, 1976) was a screenwriter and novelist who lived in the United States. During the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) inquiry into Communist influence in the motion picture business in 1947, he was one of the Hollywood Ten who refused to appear before the committee. In spite of being blacklisted, Trumbo was granted two Academy Awards: one was initially given to a front writer, and the other was handed to “Robert Rich,” Trumbo’s alias. When blacklisting began to lose credibility in 1960, it was essentially brought to an end. Trumbo was officially credited with writing the screenplays for two blockbuster films: Exodus, which was directed by Otto Preminger, and Spartacus, which was directed by Kirk Douglas.
In addition, President John F. Kennedy went to watch the film despite protesters blocking his way. In a statement released on December 19, 2011, the Writers Guild of America revealed that Trumbo has been granted full credit for his contribution on the script for the 1953 romantic comedy Roman Holiday, sixty years after the film’s original release.
