Dallas Mavericks Ownership Percentage and History

Dallas Mavericks ownership percentage is split among Mark Cuban with 85% stake and Henry Ross Perot Jr. the real estate developer has 5% stake.

The other minority shareholders that complete the remaining 10 percent are Mark Cuban’s business partner Todd Wagner and the former owner’s Carter estate.

Dallas Mavericks value is 3.3 billion in 2023 and is ranked 8th in the Forbes list of the most valuable NBA teams. They have a $143 million operating income.

Since the expansion team was founded over four decades ago, there have been only a few owners in its history. Current owner Mark Cuban is the longest-serving owner as the upcoming 2023 season will be his 24th season as the leader of the franchise.

Cuban is also the most successful and loved owner of the Mavericks as he won the team’s first-ever NBA championship and the two Conference titles in 2006 and 2011.

Dallas Mavericks Ownership Percentage

Mark Cuban 85%
Todd Wagner 5%
Henry Ross Perot Jr. 5%
Carter’s estate 5%

Dallas Mavericks Ownership Breakdown

Dallas Mavericks ownership breakdown has Mark Cuban holding 85%, Todd Wagner, H. Ross Perot Jr., and Carter’s estate are minority owners owning 5% each.

He bought the Mavericks for a handsome fee of $285 million over two decades ago. The equivalent price would exceed $500 million in 2023. Although it is a lot of dollars, Mark Cuban sure does have the capacity to do so.

Cuban is famous for being one of the “sharks” on the TV series Shark Tank bought the NBA franchise Dallas Mavericks on January 14, 2000.

The Mavericks are controlled by Mark Cuban as he is the majority shareholder in the team. He is responsible for the decisions that are made and the team’s operations.

Although the Mavericks have had Carter and Perot as owners in the past, they have all decided to retain some of the ownership and remain as minority stakeholders of the franchise.

A decision they would not regret as the Mavericks’ high valuation in 2023 is great news for the minority owners as the team generates $364 million in revenue. The operating income too is one of the best in the league.

The team also has one of the lowest debt levels (3%) among the NBA franchises. The Mavericks’ multi-year sponsorship deal with financial technology company “Chime” has surely generated quite a revenue for the team.

The Mavericks are also partners with American Airlines Center, AT&T Business, Bacardi, Chick-fil-A, Coca-Cola, KPMG, ShiftKey, and many more. Many companies and brands want to associate with a team like the Dallas Mavericks and it is not free of cost.

Does Mark Cuban Own 100 Of The Mavericks?

No, Dallas Mavs owner Mark Cuban does not own 100 percent of the Maverick. He owns 85 percent and is the major owner of the franchise which he bought in 2000.

When we talk about the owners of the Dallas Mavericks, the first name that pops up is Mark Cuban. He is the biggest shareholder of the NBA franchise, but he does not own it completely. His business partner Todd Wagner is also a part owner of the Mavericks.

Cuban does have all the say in the way the Mavericks are to be run as a sports team. He has complete control of the franchise’s decisions whereas, his partner Wagner who is also an owner does not have any say in the decision-making.

The two former owners are also minority stakeholders in the team and do not have any decision-making powers or any say in it. They are more of a passive shareholder of the Mavericks.

Owner Of Dallas Mavericks Net Worth

Mark Cuban has a net worth of 5.2 billion dollars as of September 2023. He is ranked 543 in the world among the billionaires list according to Forbes.

Cuban’s net worth is not just because of his buying the Mavericks in 2000 but has been able to accumulate the wealth through a number of ways. He first started his career as a bartender in 1982 for a bar called Elan when he moved to Dallas.

He then served as a salesperson for Your Business Software and was fired within a year. The reason for getting fired was that instead of opening the store, he met with a client to purchase a new business.

He went on to co-found MicroSolutions which would grow to over $30 million in revenue and later sold it to CompuServe in 1990. The deal was worth $6 million and Cuban made $2 million after taxes.

Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner joined Audionet which later became Broadcast.com in 1998. The company was responsible for the first live-streaming of Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and the very same year in 1999, Yahoo! acquired the company for a whopping $5.7 billion.

Cuban and Wagner are also co-founders of the media and entertainment company 2929 Entertainment which they founded in 2002.

Cuban is very active when it comes to investing in startups. He is one of the biggest “shark” investors in the reality TV show. He has also invested in cryptocurrencies like Dogecoin.

His Cost Plus Drug Company launched in 2022 is also one of his sources of accumulating such a huge net worth.

Dallas Mavericks Ownership History

Dallas Mavericks ownership history includes:

  • Donald Carter and Norm Sonju (1980-1995)
  • Henry Ross Perot Jr. (1996-1999)
  • Mark Cuban (2000-present)

Donald Carter and Norm Sonju

The Dallas Mavericks was founded in 1980 and Don Carter was the first owner and founder of the NBA expansion team. He hired Dick Motta as the first head coach for the Mavericks in their inaugural season.

The investment needed for the Mavericks was a $12 million ($44.7 million in 2023) expansion entry fee. Sonju had difficulties securing funds for the fee and Carter stepped in to guarantee the payment.

They did not qualify for the playoffs in their first three seasons as owners. They played their first postseason game in the 1983-1984 season and went on to reach the Conference semifinals which they lost.

They qualified for the postseason in five more seasons and did not make it to the playoffs in their last six seasons as owners. After the end of the 1995 season, Carter sold the team.

Henry Ross Perot Jr.

Businessman and real estate developer who is famously recognized as the developer of Alliance Texas bought the Dallas Mavericks for $125 million in March 1996.

Perot Jr. was the owner of the Mavericks for four seasons and his tenure as the owner too did not bear any fruit. They did not make it to the playoffs during these four seasons and their best division finish was 4th.

After four dreadful years, Perot sold the Mavericks to Mark Cuban and retained 5% ownership during the transaction.

Mark Cuban

Cuban started on the right foot after purchasing the Mavericks in 2000. His nature and ownership style made him a fan favorite right from the start of his tenure.

The Mavericks grew in popularity under his leadership and improved quite a lot. In his first season as owner, the Mavericks qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 10 years.

The 2005-2006 season saw the team reach new heights after they went on to play the NBA Finals but sadly lost against the Heats. The Mavericks were close to winning the league and in the 2010-2011 season, they once again reached the Finals.

They once again faced the same opponent they lost to previously. They lost 2-4 to the Heats in 2005 and in 2011, they went on to become champions by beating the Heats 4-2.

This was the first NBA championship in the Mavericks’ history and their last as of now. They did not qualify for the playoffs last season and are hopefuls for the upcoming season.
