Burt Freeman Bacharach (May 12, 1928 – February 8, 2023) was an American composer, songwriter, record producer, and pianist who wrote hundreds of pop songs between the late 1950s and the 1980s, many of which he co-wrote with lyricist Hal David.
Bacharach’s songs have been recorded by over 1,000 different artists and have won six Grammy Awards and three Academy Awards. He had 73 US and 52 UK Top 40 hits as of 2014. He was a major composer of popular music in the twentieth century.
Bacharach continued to write and produce for artists, compose for stage, TV, and film, and release his own albums throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s. He had a high level of public visibility, frequently appearing on television and performing live in concert. He appeared in two televised musical extravaganzas, “An Evening with Burt Bacharach” and “Another Evening with Burt Bacharach,” both of which were nationally broadcast on NBC. Newsweek magazine published a lengthy cover story titled “The Music Man 1970” about him.
Barbra Streisand appeared on “The Burt Bacharach Special” (also known as “Singer Presents Burt Bacharach”) in 1971, where they discussed their careers, and favorite songs, and performed songs together. Other guests on the TV special included dancer Rudolph Nureyev and singer Tom Jones.
Bacharach and David composed the score for Lost Horizon, a musical adaptation of the 1937 film, in 1973. The remake was a critical and commercial flop, resulting in a flurry of lawsuits between the composer and lyricist, as well as Warwick. When Bacharach and David refused to continue working together, she reportedly felt abandoned.
