On March 5, 1977, Welsh racing driver Tom Pryce died on the South African Grand Prix in Kyalami.
A marshal, Frederick Jansen Van Vuuren, was running across the rails to assist another driver whose car had taken fire, and Pryce was killed in the horrible event.
When the marshal’s automobile collided with Pryce’s, the marshal’s body was ripped in half, and Pryce was struck in the head by the fire extinguisher the marshal was carrying.
Pryce’s helmet strap partially decapitated him, and he died instantaneously.

What happened in the Tom Pryce accident? His Death Cause
Along the main straight, Tom Pryce was right behind Stuck’s vehicle. As Tremayne puts, stuck noticed Jansen van Vuuren and turned to the right to avoid both marshals, just missing Bill by millimeters.
Pryce couldn’t see Jansen van Vuuren from his vantage point so that he couldn’t respond as swiftly as Stuck.
At almost 270 km/h, he collided with the teen marshal. Jansen van Vuuren was launched and landed just yards in front of Zorzi’s vehicle.

He died instantly, and Pryce’s automobile brutally disfigured his body. Before striking the Shadow’s roll hoop, the fire extinguisher he held slammed into Pryce’s head.
The extinguisher was catapulted up and over the nearby grandstand due to the strike’s intensity. It fell in the back of the stand’s parking lot, where it collided with a parked car and jammed its door.
Pryce’s helmet was yanked upward by the hit with the fire extinguisher. Almost definitely, death was instantaneous.
