Craig Breedlove Obituary

American professional race car driver and five-time world land speed record holder Craig Breedlove (March 23, 1937–April 4, 2023) passed away on April 4. He was the first person in history to hit 500 mph (800 km/h) and 600 mph (970 km/h) utilizing a number of turbojet-powered vehicles that were all dubbed Spirit of America.

He made his debut in 1962, riding a freewheeling tricycle with a General Electric J47 turbojet engine (in defiance of FIA regulations requiring four wheels, at least two of which must be driven).

This first Spirit made its maiden attempt at a record on August 5, 1963, using only 90% of its usable force to travel over the measured mile at a speed of 388.47 mph (625.18 km/h).

A two-way average speed of 407.45 mph (655.73 km/h) was achieved on the return pass while operating at 95% power.
