A five-time world land speed record holder, Craig Breedlove was an American professional race car driver who lived from March 23, 1937, until April 4, 2023. He was the first person in history to hit 500 mph (800 km/h) and 600 mph (970 km/h) while driving several Spirit of America turbojet-powered cars.
He made his maiden try in a freewheeling tricycle, propelled by a General Electric J47 turbojet engine, in 1962, defying FIA regulations that called for four wheels, at least two of which must be driven. In the end, FIM gladly approved it.
This first Spirit made its maiden attempt at a record on August 5, 1963, achieving 388.47 mph (625.18 km/h) over the measured mile with only 90% of its usable thrust.
The return pass produced a two-way average speed of 407.45 mph (655.73 km/h) with 95% power.
