Coventry City F.C. is an English association football team located in Coventry, in the West Midlands region of the United Kingdom. As a member of the League One football league system, they play against teams from all across the country. Coventry City Football Club was founded in 1883 as Singers F.C., and they became members of the Football League in 1919. They are known as the Sky Blues because of the colour of their home kit. When they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3–2 in the FA Cup Final in 1987, the match was designated as one of the twelve classic FA Cup Finals, and they are one of only five clubs to have ever won the FA Cup and FA Youth Cup ‘double’ in the same season, they were regarded as a major success by the Football Association (FA). In addition, they reached the semi-finals of the League Cup in 1981 and 1990.
Prior to their relegation from the Premier League in 2001, the club was a founding member of the Premier League in 1992 and had enjoyed an amazing 34 straight seasons in the English top division. Coventry City were relegated to Football League One in 2012 after eleven seasons in the second-tier Football League Championship without achieving major success. It was the first time in the club’s 48-year history that the team has played in the third tier of the English league system. During the 1970–71 season, Coventry qualified for European competition for the first time, when they played in the European Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (now known as the UEFA Europa League), when they advanced to the second round. Despite winning 2–1 at home against Bayern Munich, they suffered a humiliating defeat on the road and were eliminated from the tournament. In 1987–88, they were unable to participate in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup since English teams were barred from participating at the time. The Highfield Road stadium served as the home of Coventry City Football Club from 1899 until 2005. Although it was the first all-seater stadium in English football when it opened in 1981, the club’s management felt it was time to build a bigger stadium in the late 1990s and selected a location in the city’s Rowley’s Green neighbourhood. The Ricoh Arena, which has a seating capacity of 32,609, was completed in August 2005, however the club decided to relocate their home games to Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium beginning with the 2013–14 season due to a rent dispute with the stadium’s owners. The team announced on August 21, 2014, that they will be returning to the Ricoh Arena after a one-year hiatus.
