He was an advocate for music education and also was the co-founder and Music Director of Boston’s acclaimed Discovery Ensemble — a chamber orchestra which was dedicated not only to giving concerts of contemporary and established repertoire, but of the highest level of musical and technical excellence and also bringing live music into the least privileged parts of Boston with workshops in local schools.
However, Discovery Ensemble closed in 2014 after the Board declared a fundraising impasse.

However, on Wednesday night, January 25, 2017, the Jacksonville Symphony Association and its musicians’ union agreed to a new five-year contract that includes raises over the course of the pact that will increase the base salary for musicians, currently $38,057, by 37% to $52,026.
The contract also provides for a larger core orchestra — 60 musicians, up from the current 53 — and a longer season — 40 weeks up from the current 35.
The new contract is a clear sign that after a decade marked by financial struggles that led to sometimes contentious labor relations, the entire organization seems on course for better days.
The association locked the musicians out for part of the 2007-2008 season before a five-year contract was reached. Then in 2013, after a year of bitter negotiations, the musicians agreed to a two-year contract that reduced base pay by 11 percent to $35,700 and shortened the season by two weeks, from 37 weeks to 35 weeks.
The current contract, agreed to during the 2014-2015 season, was for three years and provided raises of 2½ percent the first year and 1½ percent in each of the next two years.
The new contract, which begins next season, will raise the base salary from $38,057 this season to $42,518 next season and increase the base salary by 19 percent over the course of contract.
Meanwhile the season will expand from its current 35 weeks to 38 weeks during the 2017-2018 season, 39 weeks in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons, and finally 40 weeks beginning in the 2020-2021 season.
