The County Rep will represent your Ward at the County Assembly. Simply put, he is like an MP at the Parliament of Nairobi County.
In this Assembly, the County Rep is expected to;
1. Make laws for the governance of the City
2. Provide oversight to the Governor and the County Executive Committee – Meaning approve or reject the Governor’s budgets and plans for the City
3. Approve plans for exploitation of any resources within Nairobi
4. Approve plans for development and management of infrastructure in Nairobi
Therefore, a County Rep should be a person with a grasp of the issues in Nairobi and with foresight on how to improve the living standards in the entire County.
Sample some of these examples:
a. Solid Waste Management:-The County Assembly should review how garbage is currently being handled by the many private companies with old, rickety trucks and come up with a streamlined system covering separation of bio degradable, recyclable waste, transportation to central dump sites and the environmental management of the dump sites.
b. Social amenities: – When did you last see a newly constructed school, hospital or dispensary with the sign “City Council of Nairobi”?
– Is there a social hall/ community centre in your estate?
– Are there designated sports/ playing fields in your estate or neighborhood
c. Markets – You live in Langata, yet for fruits and vegetables you are forced to traverse the city for shopping at Parklands, City Market, Wakulima, Retail market etc. Even the Mama Mboga in your estate has to wake up at 3am to get fresh produce at ‘marikiti’ then she will display it under the sun and dust at your local shopping Centre. Nairobi’s County government should plan for construction of more markets across the capital to improve on hygienic handling of food stuff.
d. Lighting/ Security:- Are there security lights in your neighbourhood? Do they function?
e. Roads and drainages:- Is there a ‘rough road’ leading to your house? Does it flood when it rains? A responsive County Assembly and County Executive should make plans for construction and maintenance of all inner roads in Nairobi
f. Mushrooming constructions/ residential blocks:- Is there a plan for the management of all the mushrooming buildings in the City? Are there plans to upgrade the sewerage and road network to accommodate this increased population?
g. The examples are endless!
Therefore, make sure you elect the best candidate to be your next County Representative. We have had enough of the ‘Kanjora’ menace in this City!
