Guest Commentary: Gardner has put pressure on Russia; now he must hold the president accountable

Source; denverpost.com

Sen. Cory Gardner has been a leader in drawing attention to ongoing Russian aggression and in crafting legislation to defend our democracy.

Yet his efforts have been obstructed by the president. The resulting danger requires action by our elected representatives, and Coloradans must call upon Gardner to take a major step beyond the important work he has already done.

On July 18, 2018, Gardner co-sponsored the DETER Act, standing for “Defending Elections from Threats by Establishing Redlines.”

Five days earlier, standing next to Putin in Helsinki, Trump had stunningly declared: “President Putin… just said it’s not Russia.

I will say this, I don’t see any reason why it would be.” Gardner’s response is worth recalling: “It is an incontrovertible fact that Russia sought to influence the 2016 elections… so we must… prevent this assault on our democracy from ever happening again.

“We should be making clear to the KGB thug Vladimir Putin…that this type of behavior will be met with severe and immediate consequences.”

Trump wasn’t listening, then or now. From just one week ago: “Russia did not help me get elected… Russia didn’t help me at all.” Nothing occurred, hence no need to DETER, no need to defend against Russian attacks.

On February 13, Gardner sponsored legislation to “Hold Russia Accountable,” explaining that “Putin’s Russia is an outlaw regime…hell-bent on undermining international law and destroying the U.S.-led liberal global order.”

His news release quoted one of the bill’s co-sponsors, who explained that bipartisan efforts to hold Russia accountable had been stymied by “President Trump’s willful paralysis in the face of Kremlin aggression.”

On March 17, in co-sponsoring a bill to promote European energy security, Gardner’s news release explained that “Russia uses … bribery, corruption, and propaganda, to undermine Western institutions and install pliant governments that are unable or unwilling to counter Russia or its president, Vladimir Putin.”

He did not need to mention that strategy’s most ambitious goal: subverting an American election to “install” a “pliant government” in the leading Western nation.

More than merely pliant, Trump joins Putin in supporting right-wing nationalist parties throughout Europe, weakening the liberal order that has protected our freedom for seventy-five years.

Worse, having welcomed Putin’s interference in the 2016 election, Trump doubled down on Putin’s cover-up. He never named the aggressor or denounced the attack, while depicting the attack’s investigators as traitors who used a hoax to attempt a coup. In doing so, he has undermined our own democracy.

On April 19th, Gardner reintroduced legislation directing the State Department “to consider naming Russia for what they are — a state sponsor of terror.” Citing Putin’s “deadly chemical weapons attack on British soil” and his attack on “the 2016 United States elections,” the senator added (in a New York Times op-ed that day) that “Russia has supplied material support to the Islamic State, including assistance in recruiting.” He was pointing out that Vladimir Putin puts at risk American lives, not just our free and fair elections.

Just one day earlier, Sen. Gardner had characterized the newly released Mueller report as “a fair and impartial investigation,” leaving unchallenged the report’s detailed documentation of Russia’s “sweeping and systematic” interference in the 2016 election, Russia’s perception that “it would benefit from a Trump presidency,” Russia’s work “to secure that outcome,” and the Trump campaign’s expectation “that it would benefit electorally from information was stolen and released through Russian efforts.”

As the threat to our Republic rises, Coloradans must call upon Cory Gardner to follow through on his past actions to protect us, and to speak out in support of impeachment hearings in the House.

That requires choosing country over party. Yet Gardner can also convey — as in his refusal to vote for Trump in 2016 — that the real Republican Party is part of the historic fabric of our Republic, extending from Lincoln to Teddy Roosevelt, from Eisenhower to Reagan to McCain. By stepping up to save our country, he may also begin to save his party.

Much of the Republican base, trapped within the bubble of Trump’s tweets and Fox News, regards Gardner’s truths about Russia as a treasonous hoax and believes that the Mueller report exonerates the president.

That Putinesque spin machine demonizes not just the Democrats, but our laws, our courts, our intelligence and law enforcement communities, our responsible press, and the truth itself — all driven by Trump’s compulsion to cover up the nature and magnitude of a foreign attack to help him win.

Cory Gardner knows that, and surely he knows that his call for impeachment hearings could break through the electorally driven fears of his colleagues in Congress.

Trump loyalists, led by an infuriated president, would express outrage. But Sen. Gardner is in a position to change the national conversation in favor of the truth, perhaps even impressing the president with the futility of continuing to stand with Putin against our democracy.

Coloradans should insist that their senator act with the courage of his convictions. “Holding Russia Accountable” requires holding Trump accountable for his failure to defend our country.

The patriotism that resonates through Sen. Gardner’s legislative acts now demands that further, harder step.
