Cold Case Solved: Bay Shore NY Herbert Rice Killed Eve Wilkowitz
Herbert Rice is reportedly identified as the killer of Bay Shore 20-year-old woman Eve Wilkowitz by a genetic genealogy website recently.
The genealogy website led the FBI and Suffolk police to DNA from the suspect’s son. The murderer is recognized as Herbert Rice.
A distant relative of Rice had provided his DNA to a genealogy website. After that, they found a familial link to DNA from Eve’s rape and murder.
The relative then led the FBI to Rice’s son, who agreed to provide a DNA sample to help the case. Later, they finally discovered Herbert was the killer.
Herbert was 30 when the girl was tortured, raped, and beaten to death. That said, the murderer is not among us anymore despite the identification.
By all accounts, the recently recognized killer Rice died of cancer back in 1991. In fact, he was suspected by the police back in December.
Eve was abducted after taking a late-night train home from Manhattan on March 22, 1980. She served as a secretary at a publishing house at that time.
The dead body of the girl was discovered in a yard near her apartment which was in Bay Shore, New York, on Long Island’s South Shore.
Rice was never suspected for he didn’t have a huge record of arrests for nonviolent offences. So, his DNA sample wasn’t in a criminal database.
However, after all these years, a new technology known as genetic genealogy came in to rescue for police to pinpoint the murderer of the girl.
Above all, her sister Irene felt like a burden came off her. The body of Rice was exhumed, and it was 100 per cent identified as Eve’s killer.
That mentioned the police and detectives had travelled to her home back in December to reveal that was fairly positive about the murderer.
Eve Wilkowitz’s Sister Irene Wilkowitz
Eve Wilkowitz’s sister Irene Wilkowitz braced herself in the kitchen of her Rhode Island apartment, for what the detectives had come to unveil her.
She had received the exclusive news about the positive identification last Thursday.
The last time police had reportedly arrived at her door was when Irene was 17 informing her that they had found her sister’s body.
She became her sister’s last advocate, emailing detectives for updates every other week while urging them to try some investigative technique.
During these 42 years, Irene went to college, worked, married, welcomed two children, and even divorced. She also moved away from Long Island.
