Herm was one of the highest-earning coaches in the NFL. According to reports, his net worth was around 48 Million in 2022. He began as a coach in NFL but transferred to a full-time coach in 1987. Arizona State hired him in December 2017 with a base salary of $2 million and annual pay raise of $250,000.

Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson fired head coach Todd Graham in late 2017. He granted him a $12.8 million buyout because Graham didn’t like competing in the Cactus Bowl and the Sun Bowl. Then Anderson hired Herm Edwards to help Arizona advance in the NCAA.

When Arizona State and Edwards played in the Sun Bowl two years later, Anderson was so ecstatic that he chose against removing Edwards from his position as the college football head coach and instead handed him a contract extension and a hefty pay raise. His contract was valid till 2024, but it got terminated two years before the mentioned time.

His base salary was boosted by the extension to $3 million for 2020, with yearly increases of $200,000 from 2021 to 24. Reports claim that Herm Edwards is now entitled to a buyout because Arizona State sacked him prior to the expiration of his contract on December 31, 2024. The buyout covers 100% of the contract’s remaining value. $7.4 million would be due to Edwards. It is the same as the salaries for the final two years: $3.6 million in 2023 and $3.8 million in 2024.

At Arizona State, Edwards has a 46–26 record, including 1-2 this year and 17–14 in the Pac–12. Under Edwards, the Sun Devils were never a season away from eight victories. A team official stated that the financial details of Edwards’ departure were not finalized and were not shared.

Former Head Coach’s Early Life And Career Beginning

Herm Edwards was born on April 27, 1954, as the son of Master Sergeant Herman Edwards, Sr., and his wife, Martha. He had a strict upbringing as the son of a German woman and a World War II veteran from the United States.

He attended Monterey High School while living in Seaside, California, where he was raised. Edward participated in collegiate football while attending the University of California in 1972 and 1974, Monterey Peninsula Junior College in 1973, and San Diego State University (SDSU) for his senior year in 1975. He earned his criminal justice degree from SDSU. For several years, he assisted in raising awareness of the Monterey County Special Olympics.

Edwards started as a player instead of directly jumping into a coaching career. From 1977 to 1985, Edwards spent nine NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, spending the team’s championship appearance in Super Bowl XV. He is one short of the franchise record with 33 career interceptions.

In his nine seasons with the Eagles, he never missed a game and played in 135 straight regular-season contests before being released by Buddy Ryan, the team’s new head coach, in 1986. Before announcing his retirement, Edwards went on to play briefly for the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams in 1986. After a year, in 1987, he kickstarted his coaching career with San Jose State as a defensive assistant.

Herm Edwards’ Career As An American Football Coach

Edwards worked as a defensive assistant at San Jose State from 1987 to 1989 before joining the Kansas City Chiefs as a scout and defensive backs coach until 1995. He served as the defensive assistant head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers till 2000 under Tony Dungy. Later, Edwards was appointed the New York Jets head coach on January 28, 2001.

Following the 2005 campaign, Chiefs president Carl Peterson made what might have been construed tampering comments to the media about interest in hiring Edwards. The Kansas City Chiefs were given authorization by the Jets to talk with Edwards. Edwards still had two years left on his Jets contract at the time, but the Jets traded him to the Kansas City Chiefs for a player after five difficult years. Unfortunately, he had a difficult time while working with the Chiefs and was let go in early 2009.

After a humiliating exit from the team, he had no options other than working for ESPN as an analyst. He returned to the game after seven years and was appointed the head coach of the Arizona State football team on December 3, 2017.

His tenure with the squad got off to a strong start, and as a result of his outstanding performance, he was allowed to extend his contract with a pay increase through 2024. However, things began to derail after ASU acknowledged on June 16, 2021, that the NCAA is looking into the football program’s recruitment of high school athletes during the COVID-19 period in 2020.

That season saw several assistant coaches get administrative leaves of absence. Despite accusations, Edwards continued to serve as the Sun Devils head coach despite the widespread defection. Ultimately, The day after losing to Eastern Michigan 30-21, Arizona State sacked Edwards on September 18, 2022.
