Cleveland Browns Assistant Coaches and Coaching Staff

Cleveland Browns Assistant Coaches comprise Raymond Ventrone, Alex Van Pelt, and Jim Schwartz. Ventrone joined the team in February 2023.

Ephraim Banda at Safeties, and Bill Musgrave as Senior Offensive Assistant are two new additions to the coaching staff.

Just this year, it was announced that Ventrone would join the Browns’ new assistant head coach and special teams coordinator.

The former Safety was the undrafted free agent signing for the New England Patriots in 2005. He was with the New York Jets for the 2007 offseason and partly included in the practice squad.

He remained with the Patriots from 2007 to 2008, winning the Super Bowl LI. He then played for the Browns (2009-12) and then for the San Francisco 49ers (2013-14).

In 2015, Raymond succeeded Scott O’Brien, becoming the Patriots’ assistant special teams coach.

He was recruited by the Indianapolis Colts in 2018 as the special teams coach. He spent five years with them before heading to Cleveland for his new journey.

Cleveland Browns Head Coach

Kevin Lawrence Stefanski has been the Cleveland Browns head coach since 2020. It will be his fourth year with the Browns.

Stefanski was a Defensive Back for the Penn Quakers. He won the 2000 Quakers Freshman of the Year award and was selected twice in the All-Ivy League.

After going undrafted in 2005, Stefanski turned his attention toward the coaching side of the game. He became the assistant director of football operations at the University of Pennsylvania.

In 2006, the Minnesota Vikings hired the 41-year-old as the Assistant to the HC. He spent fourteen years with the Vikings and served in different roles till 2019. His roles were:

  • Assistant Quarterbacks coach (2009-13)
  • Tight Ends coach (2014-15)
  • Running backs coach (2016)
  • Quarterbacks coach (2017-18)
  • Interim offensive coordinator (2018)
  • Offensive Coordinator (2019)

He has coached players such as Brett Favre, Christian Ponder, and Case Keenum during this tenure.

Kevin served under three HCs: Brad Childress (2006-10), Leslie Frazier (2010-13), and Mike Zimmer (2014-19).

First Job As The Head Coach

The Browns signed Stefanski on a five-year deal to be their 18th head coach on 13 January 2020. It was his first role as the HC.

Before him, the franchise hired and fired Gregg Williams (2018) and Freddie Kictches (2019).

It was a stumbling start as his side lost against the Baltimore Ravens in their first game of 2020. But he recovered after the loss and pulled an 11-5 record.

It was the first winning season for the team since 2007. Also, they clinched a playoff berth for the first time in eighteen years.

Likewise, the Browns held their nerve against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round, marking their first postseason victory since 1994.

Unfortunately, they lost in the AFC Divisional Round against the Kansas City Chiefs.

An amazing first year as the Browns head coach, Kevin was appreciated with Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year, PWFA Coach of the Year, and Sporting News Coach of the Year awards.

Since then, he hasn’t been able to replicate the success. He led the team to 8-9 win-loss record in 2021 and 7-10 in 2022.

Stefanski must deliver big in the upcoming campaign as they have the seventh easiest Strength of Schedule (.460). The likes of Nick Chubb,  Deshaun Watson, Denzel Ward, and Amari Cooper need to perform to their standard and find a way to playoff through the stacked AFC North.

Cleveland Browns Offensive Coordinator

Cleveland Browns hired Alex Van Pelt on January 29, 2020, as their Offensive Coordinator and QB coach. The 53-year-old started coaching in 2005.

Alex Van Pelt

Pelt’s first role was as Quarterbacks coach at Frankfurt Galaxy, who played in the World League of American Football.

Pelt played as a Quarterback for the Pittsburgh Panthers. He set many records during his college days.

Pittsburgh Steelers chose him as the eighth-round pick in 1993. But he couldn’t make the final roster cut and was released.

He was associated with the Kansas City Chiefs (1993) and Buffalo Bills (1994-2003).

After retirement, he joined the color commentary team of the Bills Radio Network broadcast in 2004.

  • Washington Redskins: Offensive Line coach (2017-19)
  • Washington Redskins: Interim head coach (2019)

He was hired by the Browns on the 31st of January 2020.

With 43 years of coaching experience in football, he enters his 22nd year in the NFL. No one knows the offensive line’s mechanism better than Bill.

He has trained 14 Pro Bowlers who appeared 32 times in the Pro Bowl. His contribution was monumental in the Oakland Raiders Super Bowl XXXVII run.

Whichever team he lands in, the players improve in rushing games. In 2020, the Browns averaged 148.4 yards per game and were third in the league.

Likewise, other members of the offensive staff are as follows:

Bill Musgrave Senior Offensive Assistant
Stump Mitchell Run Game Coordinator / Running Backs
Chad O’Shea Pass Game Coordinator / Wide Receiver
Callie Brownson Assistant Wide Receivers
T. C. McCartney Tight Ends
Scott Peters Assistant Offensive Line

Cleveland Browns Defensive Coordinator

Cleveland Browns recruited Jim Schwartz to be their newest Defensive Coordinator on the 18th of January 2023. He once worked as the Browns’ Personnel scout.

His first stint with the team was in 1993, which lasted till 1995.

Before that, Schwartz was with the Maryland Terrapins (1989), the Minnesota Golden Gophers (1990), the North Carolina Central Eagles (1991), and the Colgate Raiders (1992).

He got his first coaching stint in the National Football League in 1996 when the Baltimore Ravens named him their Outside Linebackers coach.

  • Ephraim Banda – Safeties
  • Zach Dunn – Defensive assistant
  • Jeff Anderson – Defensive quality control
