Katy Hawelka Murder At Clarkson University

Brian McCarthy will have his seventh parole hearing in April 2021 for the 1986 sexual assault and murder of Katy Hawelka on the Clarkson University campus.

Despite the fact that he continues to lie about the crime and shows no remorse, the Hawelka family is required to testify before parole boards every two years in the hopes of keeping him behind bars.

The fact that the crime was seen in part by two college security guards who clearly misconstrued what they were witnessing has added to the incident’s troubling nature for some on campus and in the community. The guards claimed they didn’t intervene because they believed the pair was having consenting sexual encounters.

According to Police Chief Clinton Mattot, the two guys would have had no way of knowing a rape was taking place under the circumstances.

Katy’s family has been waiting for the state Board of Parole’s judgment every two years since 2009. The state Office of Victim Assistance also assists with oral victim impact statements.

McCarthy’s most recent hearing was held on April 20 at the medium-security Cayuga Correctional Facility, and Katy’s family was informed of the denial later that month.
