Clara Mamet Interview
Source: https://www.teenvogue.com
What drew you to such a wacky show?
“Honestly, first it was just that it’s a job, because the role came up as I was graduating and I needed a job! It’s a miracle that it happened in the first place. I left high school, and I was worried. But of course it’s also a funny show.”
All of the alien characters have adopted famous-athlete names. What would you choose?
“The sad thing is that I know no athletes’ names. I am not a sports girl at all. If I had to choose, I don’t know… maybe Mickey Mantle?”
Do you and Zosia compare notes about TV acting?
“I’m in L.A. and she’s in New York, so when we talk on the phone, we both sort of mumble because we’re both tired. What’s cool, though, is that the casting director who gave me the part actually gave Zosia her first part.”
What else are you working on?
“I wrote and directed a movie called Two-Bit Waltz. We just wrapped. It was a blast, blast, blast. My mom played my mom, William H. Macy played my dad, and Jared Gilman from Moonrise Kingdom played my little brother. I starred in it, too. It was the most fun ever. It was about a girl who has a breakdown—very autobiographical, obviously. [Laughs] I hope to take it to festivals, which feels like my version of trying to get into college. I also had a bit part in Night Moves, but it was exciting nonetheless.”
Do you plan to continue writing and starring in your own projects?
“Yeah, you know, after I wrote and acted in this movie, I think that’s it for me—it’s all I want to do now. There’s a lot of creative freedom. Acting is a whole boatload of fun, but I prefer to do it on my own terms.”
Your family is very involved in theater. Is that something you’re interested in?
“I wrote two plays before I was cast on The Neighbors. They actually got published, which was cool. I’d love to do that again, and it’s such a typical girl thing to say, but I would totally love to play Juliet at some point.”
