Claire King reveals how her cheating, gambling ex-husband drove her to drink and struggle with debt

Former Emmerdale actress Claire King spoke to addiction counsellor Mandy Saligari about the painful split with her husband and co-star Peter Amory – and the consequences of their marriage breakdown

With roles as a soap siren in Emmerdale and a tough prison governor in Bad Girls, Claire King is no stranger to drama.

And off-screen, the star’s life has imitated her art with ordeals that could have been dreamed up by her scriptwriters.

Claire, 54, who was Kim Tate in Emmerdale, has bravely opened up about how she has suffered heartbreak, depression, addiction and near financial ruin.

And she revealed that the 2004 breakdown of her marriage to Peter Amory – her on-screen stepson Chris Tate in the ITV soap – was what set it off.

She said: “He liked a drink but he was also gambling as well. I mean big gambling.

“I knew he always gambled but not in that way. Lose your house money, lose everything money.

“I was £9,000 short of paying my mortgage off and then suddenly, poof. It was just horrible and it was draining.”

They divorced after ten years of marriage when it emerged Amory had been cheating with Claire’s co-star Samantha Giles, who played Bernice Blackstock. Claire spoke to addiction counsellor Mandy Saligari about the painful split for Channel 5’s In Therapy, which airs next week.

Admitting she felt like a “failure”, she said: “We’d split up due to his infidelity. That and the fact every bugger knew.

“It happened in my house, the local pub, workplace.

“Then they split and we thought we’d work it out, then they got together again. Six months later … finished. I felt as though it was the end of something but also a failure. And I didn’t want it to be a failure. It was a loss as well. It was a failure of a marriage but the loss of a good friend. I really didn’t know it would affect me so badly.”

Claire also spoke candidly about using booze to mask her own money worries after struggling to find work when she quit ITV prison drama Bad Girls. She enjoyed a string of top roles since her big break in an Adam Ant pop video in 1982, so to be facing financial ruin as work dried up was tough.

She added: “Hitting 40, having a divorce and not having children and getting deeper into debt. To the point where I sold my wardrobe, dresses, everything, even collectors’ items, as I had no money. I thought, ‘God, am I ever going to work again?’

“I think I was depressed. I was on a very rocky road at the time. It wasn’t a great time and that’s where I went a bit off the rails, drinking too much.

“I thought I was coping but it’s the old adage – it doesn’t help at all. I know I’m not an alcoholic but I do like a drink. I do use it as a crutch and I am aware it’s really bad for feelings and emotions when you’re in a bad place.

“I didn’t know if I’d hit rock bottom or not. It was low enough for me to look around and think, ‘Woah, this is not right, I’m not functioning properly. Maybe I’m not working because I’m not giving off the right signals’.”

Landing the part of Erica Holroyd in Coronation Street in 2014, after she had a facelift, helped turn things around.

“It got me out of that black hole,” said Claire. “My agent at the time had said, ‘Right, what you need is a facelift.’ It got me loads of work because I just felt better about myself and it gave me a little perk up.”

During the counselling sessions the actress, who quit Corrie in August, reflected further on getting older.

She said: “I was this 25-year-old who did 100 front covers or whatever. Now I’m a bit invisible really. I’ll be a pensioner in five years.”

And talking of how she never had children, Claire said: “It just never happened. Pete already had a son and didn’t particularly want any more. And I got a career, I was just starting out, then bang, before you know it – tick-tock, tick-tock – and that’s it.”

The star admitted that not having children prompted her to save money for her old age, after her mum told her two years ago: “If I had to live again, I probably wouldn’t have children.”

Claire said: “I was kind of shocked, then I thought, ‘Well, I can’t really judge her on that.’

“I know she’s had me and that’s it – we’re done and dusted.

“I could turn round to her and say, ‘Actually, we’re looking after you now.’ Who am I going to have to look after me when I’m old?

“That’s why I work, that’s why I try and put some money away for a pension, for the future, in case I’m disabled. I don’t have the kids who could look after me.” Following her counselling, Claire said: “I’ve probably not been kind enough to myself.

“Having the therapy with Mandy has made me look at life in a different way. It really made me think about myself more, which I never did.”

When asked about the revelations on his gambling and alcohol use, a spokesman for Amory said: “Peter continues to be very busy working as an actor but can confirm that he and Claire have a very amicable relationship and are in regular contact with one another.”
