Immobile out of Italy squad

Updated: May 24 2018

Lazio striker Ciro Immobile has been forced to pull out of the Italy squad with injury, so he’ll miss the upcoming friendlies.

The 28-year-old finished as joint Capocannoniere alongside Inter’s Mauro Icardi, but he suffered with a thigh injury toward the end of the season.

Despite returning for the final game of the season, Immobile had to be substituted and Roberto Mancini confirmed earlier today he was struggling.

Now the FIGC has confirmed that he has withdrawn from the squad and returned to his club, so he’ll miss the friendlies with Saudi Arabia, France and the Netherlands.

Lazio star Ciro Immobile threatened by crazed knifeman while on beach with wife and two young daughters

Updated: 9th July 2018

The Italy striker was verbally abused before the culprit – understood to be a fan of rivals Pescara – threatened to stab him with a knife stolen from a nearby restaurant.

Sunbathers rushed to help Immobile and armed police arrested a suspect.

Ex-Pescara loanee Immobile, 28, who has been linked with Tottenham, finished last season as Serie A’s joint top scorer alongside Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi on 29 goals.

A police spokesman said: “The attacker will be charged with threatening behaviour. His motive appears to have been footballing rivalry.

“He used insulting words, then suddenly produced a knife with threatening intentions. Shouts from people nearby caused him to run off.”

Nearby sunbathers went to help Ciro Immobile who was with his young family

Horrifed restaurant owner Mauro Cioffi said: “This shouldn’t happen. This is a peaceful beach, but we don’t have enough security.

“I don’t know the attacker. This is the type of incident that happens when people give too much importance to loyalty in football.”

And mayor Antonio Luciani apologised for the behaviour at the Francavilla a Mare resort on Italy’s Adriatic coast.

He said: “This was a terrible situation. I apologise for it, and thank the town’s people for their support.
