Chuck Collins (born 1959) is a Washington, DC-based author and senior researcher who heads the Institute for Policy Studies’ Program on Inequality and the Common Good. He’s also a co-founder of the Wealth for Common Good organisation. He is a specialist on economic inequality in the United States and has led attempts to bring together investors and business executives to speak out publicly against corporate practises and policies that exacerbate inequality. Collins has collaborated on tax equality issues with a number of rich people, including William H. Gates, Sr. and George Soros. He is the great-grandson of Oscar Mayer, a 19th-century meatpacking magnate, and the grandson of Edward Joseph Collins, a pianist and composer from the United States, as well as Michael Collins, Ireland’s liberator.
He initially gained notoriety when, at the age of 26, he left a $500,000 fortune to various organisations. 99 to 1: How Wealth Inequality is Destroying the World and What We Can Do About It is his first book (ISBN 978-1609945923). Collins coauthored the book Wealth and Our Commonwealth: Why America Should Tax Accumulated Fortunes with William H. Gates, Sr., which argues that the inheritance tax is both fair and essential. He’s also the coauthor of Robin Hood Was Right and a number of other titles. Collins was a co-founder of the Boston-based group United for a Fair Economy. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Hampshire College in 1984 and a master’s degree from Southern New Hampshire University’s School of Community Economic Development in 1987.
