It might sound counterproductive, but other than his heritage, the biggest reason the name Christopher Stokowski is known is because there’s virtually nothing known about him. Christopher, who disappeared from the public eye and separated from his family around 40 years ago, didn’t hear from anyone again until one day in 2016 – when he reappeared on the scene.
Christopher Stokowski Biography, Age and Family
Stokowski’s family tree is robust, to say the least. It’s littered with everything from celebrities and lavish lifestyles to heartaches and public scandals. This tumultuous lifestyle eventually made Christopher want to get away from it all.
Stokowski’s father is Leopold Stokowski. Born in 1882, Léopold is one of the most prominent conductors of the early and mid-20th century. He was the musical director of a myriad of orchestras and notably participated in the 1940 Disney film Fantasy among others. In the early 1900s, Leopold and Christopher’s mother attended the same parish where Leopold was the choirmaster and organist.
Christopher Stokowski is a product of his father’s third marriage. He has siblings from his father’s previous marriages. Her older brother, sister, Sonia Maria Noel, was an actress. His father’s second marriage to Johnson & Johnson heiress Evangeline Johnson was through two other half-sisters. Their names were Gloria Luba Stokowski and Andrea Sadja Stokowski.
Christopher’s mother, Gloria Laura Vanderbilt was Leopold’s third wife. She was born in 1924 and was in the limelight almost from birth. At age 10, Gloria was the subject of one of the most documented and high-profile child custody lawsuits of the 20th century. In this legal battle, her mother, Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt and her aunt Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney fought for custody of her.
Christopher’s mother grew up amid wealth and wealth. By age 15, she was leading a carefree, carefree life in Hollywood. Her last name and the fact that she was young and beautiful obviously played a part in her various celebrity relationships of the time. In all, she had a romantic relationship by marrying the agent Pasquale Di Cicco, who had become physically abusive.
After the marriage ended, she married Leopold who was 43 years her senior a few weeks after her divorce from Di Cicco. She was twenty at the time. She gave birth to their first child, Leopold Stanislaus Stokowski in 1950. Christopher Stokowski arrived two years later, in 1952.
The union between Christopher’s parents lastedfor twelve years and ended in divorce. His mother continued to search for love, which led to her having two more marriages which brought Christopher more half-siblings. After her third marriage to director Sidney Lumet failed, she married author Wyatt Cooper. Wyatt came from a close-knit family that gave Christopher’s mother the home comforts she had sought all her life. She had two children with Wyatt before his untimely death in 1978 due to heart bypass failure. Christopher had two half-brothers from this union – Carter Vanderbilt Cooper, born in 1965, and Anderson Hays Cooper, the famous CNN correspondent, followed in 1967.
Christopher leaves his family
Christopher was an extremely shy child. His mother, Gloria, had obtained custody of him and his younger brother after their marriage to his father ended. However, his mother’s growing celebrity status was not favorable to young Christopher. When Gloria married Wyatt and gave birth to Carter and Anderson, Christopher felt even further removed from his mother’s love and care.
As a student at Bard College, Christopher led a solo and also veered away from the name ‘Stokowski’ as he tried to carve out a place for himself as a musician. Christopher was also living with his mother at Wyatt’s, a situation that his half-brother Anderson Cooper helped bond between them.
Christopher found love in 1974. Her name was April Sandmeyer and the two planned to bond when Christopher’s father fell ill. This led to a series of events that turned Christopher’s life upside down. Her father, Leopold, died in 1977, and her mother’s husband, Wyatt Cooper, followed several months later.
Her mother soon began to seek advice from a handsome young therapist, Dr. Christ L. Zois. Gloria trusted Zois and often spent a lot of money on him. He also occasionally gave her advice about her children and their romantic relationships.

Sometime later, Christopher and April Sandmeyer discovered that Dr. Zois had interfered in their relationship and made some very derogatory and heartbreaking remarks to Gloria Vanderbilt. His fiancée was so heartbroken that she broke up with Christopher. This, in turn, puts the final nail in the coffin of Christopher’s relationship with his mother.
Chris stopped talking to his Gloria and moved out of the house in an attempt to win April back. When all his efforts were in vain, Christopher, who was 26 at the time, just wanted to get away from it all. He told this mother that he was leaving New York and he would never come back. Christopher cut himself off from the family completely and never returned, even after his younger half-brother Carter killed himself ten years later.
The family reunion
On April 9, 2016, HBO released a gripping and revealing feature-length documentary titled Nothing to Say: Gloria Vanderbilt & Anderson Cooper. The documentary was essentially a catalog of candid conversations with Christopher’s mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, and his half-brother, Anderson Cooper. The documentary gave viewers a detailed insight into Gloria’s equally abysmal and glorious past.
Critics were quick to point out that the documentary revealed nothing about Christopher. A gesture revealed by his mother in an interview was more an act of love than of meanness. She said that when Christopher left, he left for good because he wanted to stay out of the public eye. She concludes that her decision not to mention Christopher’s name in the film was out of respect for her wish to stay tuned to audiences.
However, the film turned out to be a masterstroke, Christopher Stokowski reconciled with his mother and his entire family shortly after its release. He contacted April Sandmeyer who then reconnected him to his family. In November of the same year, his uncle Harry Cooper revealed in an interview that he had already seen his family three times since the film’s release.
Christopher Stokowski net worth?
Christopher’s 38-year absence certainly hasn’t affected his financial security. This is because it comes from two renowned names – Stokowski and Vanderbilt.
His father, Leopold, was a world-renowned music director and composer who amassed a considerable fortune in his lifetime. When Leopold died in 1977, he left much of his huge fortune in musical recordings to Christopher.
Again, on Vanderbilt’s side, Christopher had a brother, Leopold Stanislaus, and two half-brothers, Carter and Anderson. However, with Carter’s suicide in 1988, and Anderson openly admitting that he did not want the money from his mother’s estate of $200 million fortune, Christopher’s share grew larger.
There are no online sources or verifiable public records that state Christopher Stokowski net worth. However, all his inheritance money from both sides of the family proves that money will be the least of his worries.
