Christopher Fowler, author of the Bryant & May series detective novels, died at the age of 69 three years after being diagnosed with cancer.
From the Second World War to the present day, the thrillers depicting the seasoned detectives Bryant & May solving unusual crimes in London have made Fowler most famous. Full Dark House, the first novel in the series, was released in 2003.
The series has now expanded to include 17 additional volumes, the most recent of which, London Bridge Is Falling Down, was released in 2021. Bryant and May’s Peculiar London, a sequel that investigates the characters’ London, was released the year before.
Fowler’s husband, Pete, shared the news of his death on the author’s Twitter account late Thursday:
“Christopher Robert Fowler, 3 score & 10, 1953-2023. His sparkle, joy and humour are gone, but remain in my heart and his work. What a remarkable person we all shared. Goodbye to a beautiful man, a beautiful mind, my partner in crime and soulmate. Pete x Happy #WorldBookDay2023”
Roofworld, a fanciful thriller set in 1988 about a hidden community living atop London’s buildings, was Fowler’s debut book. This was followed by a number of other books with a supernatural bent, including Spanky, Disturbia, Rune, and Psychoville.
