Dean began skating at the age of 10 after receiving a pair of skates as a Christmas present, his parents being keen ballroom dancers. Being the captain of the football team at school, Dean also saw ice skating as a sport that wa athletic and graceful. His first skating partner was Sandra Elson with whom he began skating together when he was 14 and they competed as ice dancers under their instructor LenSayward for a few years. Dean agreed to try out Jayne Torvill who was another skater at the Nottingham rink. Torvill and Dean were first coached by Janet Sawbridge but Betty Callaway became their coach in 1978.
Dean left school in 1974 to join the Nottingham Police Force. It was very challenging for dean to undergo police cadet training, as his schedule often clashed with his skating training sessions and him and Torvill had to practise during his off-hours. The difficult times brought them closer and gave them a sense of discipline that was to prove vital throughout their career.

The duo’s free program at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, performed to the music of Maurice Ravel’s Boléro, became world-famous. Torvill and Dean received nine 6.0 marks for artistic impression, which was the highest possible score and the only time ever that an all-perfect score was achieved. Their perfomance was one of the most popular achievements in the history of British sport, which was watched by a British television audience of 24 million people.
The duo turned professional after their 1984 Olympic win. They became ineligible to participate in Olympic competition under then existing Olympic Games rules as professionals. The International Skating Union relaxed the rules for professional skaters in 1993 and that allowed them to participate in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer where they won a bronze medal.
In 1989, the duo was admitted to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. The duo remained close friends although they did not skate together again until 2006.
They began starring in the ITV show Dancing on Ice in January 2006. Dancing On Ice runs from January to March and then goes on tour to arenas across the United Kingdom. Dean stated that he was open to working with the National Ice Skating Association to help British competitive skating in January 2012. The duo were ambassadors for the 2012 European Figure Skating Championships in Sheffield. DANCING On Ice’s Torvill and Christopher Dean stunned fans as they danced together on 10th March 2019 after admitting they worry that each time is their “last”. It has been over 30 years since the world’s most famous ice skating duo took home an Olympic gold, and they gave viewers a taste of their incredible talents in the ITV show final.
Before Strictly star James Jordan was crowned the winner of the 2019 series, viewers were left amazed by the beautiful performance from the top judges.
Fans flocked to Twitter to share their reaction and one said: “Nobody will ever top the partnership of Torvil and Dean . Just the cutest” One more wrote: “It doesn’t matter how many amazing skaters out there but when torvil and dean skate something truly magical happens”
The skating legends performed Ravel’s Bolero at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics on Valentines Day in 1984 and Chris, 60, admitted they are grateful every time they perform together nowadays.
Speaking about performing together now, Chris recently said: “Do we feel those 35 years in our bodies? Yes! You reach a certain age and that downward slope. Nowadays every time we perform we feel like we don’t know if that’s our last performance.
The remarkable duo recently performed together for the first time in four years on the ITV show, but Chris stopped short of gliding across the ice with Jayne above his head.
He added to the Mirror: “I could still do it. But there are age appropriate things and I don’t think I should be throwing a 60-year-old lady around the ice. “We still feel in our 20s. In our mind we can do everything but our body doesn’t allow it. We’re the best we can be at the moment. “I hope we’ll realise when it’s time to stop skating before other people realise it.”
The sensational Ice Dance legends got a perfect score from the judges in 1984 on Valentine’s Day when they performed Ravel’s Bolero at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics.
They received 12 perfect scores of 6.0, with sixes from all nine judges for artistic impression – a feat which had never been seen before. When the pair met Chris, following the breakup of his parents’ marriage, channeled his anger into skating.
