Coach John Barnes coached Kluwe at Los Alamitos High School in Los Alamitos, California. He enrolled to the University of California to pursue a political science and history degree. Kluwe ran for a total of 6624 yards while playing for the UCLA Bruins, setting school records for both total punts in a season and total punt yards run (in 2003).
Kluwe was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in 2005 and signed as a free agent with the club, but following training camp, he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings. He signed a $8.3 million deal in 2007 that will last through 2013. Kluwe’s career would be hampered by a series of injuries, yet he continued to play through the pain. He holds many Vikings punting marks, including the best career punt average, second-best career net yards average (37.2), and third-most punts in a season (71 in 2005).
Kluwe was released by the Vikings on May 15, 2013, and signed with the Oakland Raiders, but was released in September. Kluwe announced his retirement on January 3rd, 2014. He hadn’t played on the field in almost a year at the time. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame the same year.
